First Fill experience

Recommended Posts

So I went in for my first fill yesterday and it went horribly. The surgeon stuck the needle in me about ten times with no luck trying to find the soft spot on the port. Finally he said for me to come back on monday and he would do it under an xray so he could find the center spot. As I sat up, I asked him if it was normal to have some shoulder pain. Well, twenty minutes later I was rushed to the emergency room because of the amount of air the doctor inadvertently injected under my right diaphragm. I ended up being admitted to the hospital and held over night so they could do xrays, give me IV fluids, and some crazy pain meds. The surgeon is now afraid my port may be flipped which is why he couldn't get the needle in. All in all it was a miserable experience and it makes me not want a fill anymore.

Anyone else have trouble like this?

I am so sorry you had such a terrible experience. Hope you are doing better now.

I went for my 1st. fill today, Thursday, July 16, at 2:30pm and could not have had a better experience had I written it myself!

I only lost 1 more pound since the surgery but my doctor said I have lost 11 pounds of fat!! Can you imagine!!!! I know my clothes are getting looser by the day! I'm happy for that.

Back to the fill. I forgot to ask him how many cc's he put in so I may call the office tomorrow and find out so I can post it. Anyway, I am now on Clear Liquids for the next two days (which I am not happy about). I didn't eat anything all day today so hate to say I am hungry about now. Will have a big glass of ice Water and a sugar free Jello and call it a night!!

Talke care all.

MGZ ask your doctor to numb you before he gives you a fill. I am afraid of needles and it helps to be numb. My NP stuck me numerous times before she found the soft spot on the port. I had no idea I was being stuck. I know only because my husband was there holding my hand and he asked if I felt each time she stuck me. Thankfully I did not feel it. The NP told me she had to try many times because I have a lot of scar tissue that the needle could not penetrate. She even had to change needles.

I hope your port did not flip. My NP also uses an xray to make sure the port is in the correct position. Your doctor will be able to tell right away once he uses the xray.

Come back and post your update. I wish you well. Do not forget to ask to get a numbing shot.

Question re numbing shots. Don't you find these hurt? In my experience whenever I have had a local they sting like crazy which in my mind would be worse then the actual fill.

The numbing shot does sting, but it helps to have it in the event you are stuck more than once. I would not be able to endure being stuck multiple times because of my fear. Days after my fill I am so sore around my port and even swollen. I know that is due to being stuck so many times during a fill. I always come out crying not from pain, but knowing a needle is being stuck into my belly.

I'm going for my 2nd fill on Monday. First one was great, done by my surgeon, found the port first time. The app on Monday is with one of his team so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that whoever does it is as good as the surgeon.

Here in Aus they like to fill conservatively and don't use flouro etc.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
