Protein ideas?

Recommended Posts

I feel like I'm in a funk. Does anybody have any good ideas for easy Proteins other than chicken? I am getting really sick of chicken right now, but I want something that I can prepare fairly easily.

thanks!

Hey, theres tons of other Proteins out there besides chicken. There is fish (salmon is my favorite) and other types of delicious seafood. I'm sure there are lean types of red meat (I'm not sure what they are because I don't eat red meat or chicken, but I'm sure they are out there). Red meat is probably fine is moderation. And of course there is always tofu. Since I don't eat chicken or red meat, tofu and fish are mainstays of my diet (although I'm still doing mushy/blended foods right now). And of course, theres always Protein Shakes. I drink Unjury. The chocolate with half a serving of Peanut Butter and skim milk is so delicious - tastes like a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. Sometimes I feel guilty because its so good.

When I need Protein and can't stand another Protein Drink, I have a 5 oz can of Bumblebee Light Chunk tuna (in water). The whole can has 26 grams Protein and only 100 calories.

Pork tenderloin is also very good, and lean and high in protein. A 3 oz serving has about 80 calories and 22 grams protein. Sometimes I grill a whole loin, or I will cut it into medallions for grilling. There are lots of easy recipes out there.

I also make chili in a slow cooker pretty regularly with extra lean ground beef. Not only is the beef high in protein, but so are the Beans. And the Beans are high in Fiber.

Remember turkey too! I get thick-sliced rotisserie turkey breast from the deli, wrap it around a piece of swiss and dip it in balsamic vinegar for a quick snack. I also make my own "protein shots" with a sugarfree pudding cup and add a scoop of chocolate Protein Powder. You can do this with yogurt too. Also, edamame (soybeans) are high in Protein, as are Beans like a previous poster stated. Another favorite snack is apple slices dipped in peanut butter...mmmm....

There are also low-calorie Protein Water drinks.. Special K's K2O comes to mind, and there are others. That'll help supplement your protein without loading up on liquid calories, and you'll be getting in water like you should.

Hi Isaviolinist. That Peanut Butter added in with chocolate Unjury shake sounds fantastic. I am going to try that soon. Do you mix that up in a blender? Does the peanut butter stick to the blades? I know I probably sound like a duh, but it's better for me to know in advance if there are problems so I know what to do. Also, I have been interested in tofu but what the heck do you do with it ? Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you can tolerate them -- almonds are great. I like the ones that are oven baked with sea salt.

I also just found a new Breakfast product. It is Jimmy Dean's low fat Breakfast bowl. It is scrambled eggs (egg whites only), cheese, potatoes and turkey sausage. It has 23 grams of Protein and keeps me full for a long time. You just heat it in the microwave for 2 -3 minutes.

I also liked refried Beans with salsa and low fat cheese all melted together in the microwave! I also like Newdicarlo's snack of turkey wrapped around cheese. I use the reduced fat colby/jack sticks.

Hope you get some good ideas!

The turkey wrapped around cheese is great! But even tastier if you grill it quickly in a pan, the cheese gets melty, turkey browns a bit. Mix it up with different cheeses, different flavoured turkey deli meat... I call it grilled cheese, bandster style!

Hey slimmap....here is my recipe (that I stole from another bandster)

1 c. ice

1 pk. Swiss Miss sugar free hot choc.

2 pks sweetener

1 Tbls. peanut butter

1/2 c. milk

1 scoop choc. Protein powder.< /span>

Put in the blender, I usually set it on crush ice for a couple of seconds, then I have a milkshake setting that I put it on. Comes out almost like a milk shake. It is so yummy!

Or you can do this...

1 c. ice

1 Tbls. PB

2 Tbls. sf choc. pudding mix

1/2 c. milk

1 scoop Protein mix

also yum.

I like to also do frozen black cherries or blueberries.

1c. frozen fruit

2 pk. sweetener

1 scoop protein mix ( I like choc. w/ cherries, & van. with bl.berries) If you use fresh fruit then use 1 c. of ice

Throw in blender and enjoy

Hope these help you slimmap

One of my favorites is venison- if you live in an area where you can get it. It is about as lean as you can get- when I cook up burger there is like three drops of grease that I can get out with paper towel, not even have to drain it is that lean. Steaks are great, and it goes down really well with the band.

4 ounces of Breakstone fat-free cottage cheese (one of the little individual-size cups) has almost 12 grams of Protein

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
