Fill Question

Recommended Posts

Im sure this has been asked a thousand times, but could someone please tell me how long after a fill does it take to get restriction? I had my first fill yesterday and today I had oatmeal for Breakfast. I only ate 4 oz of it, because that was what I was told to do, even though I wanted more. 2 hours later...im starving again!

According to the doctor he normally puts in 5-6 cc's for a first fill but since I had "good restriction" he only put in 3 cc's. Should I call him back and tell him it isnt working?

Excellent question - I want to know that too. My first fill was last Friday, and yesterday I had a regular dry turkey sandwhich on wheat bread for lunch. It was well-chewed and eaten slowly, but it doesn't seem like I should be able to eat that, maybe at all!

Everyone is different. I didn't get any restriction on my first fill. And had too much on my second. (so I had some taken out). My third fill was almost a month ago and is just starting to kick in now.

There is no cut and dry answer. One day I can eat everything and last evening I had a hard time getting liquids in.

If you have just had a fill, wait a couple of weeks to see if it kicks in. For some, it gets real tight around pms time. Others are tight in the morning. I get tight in the heat and in the afternoon/evening.

Its a learning experience that we all have to go through to learn how our band and bodies work. No two people work the same. And no bodies react the same.

This learning experience also gives us the opportunity to re-acquaint ourselves with our bodies, hunger pains, mental hunger, etc. Enjoy the journey. Celeste

Hi Bernadette,

The VG band sometimes takes longer to reach a good fill level because it holds more saline than other bands. I would wait at least a week or more first before you call the doc and ask for more. Sometimes fills take a week or longer to kick in . It may be that it is not enough also. But give it a little bit of time first. Eat your solid Protein first, then your veggies and see how you feel and try to gauge the quantity it takes for you to get full.

My fills take about a week to kick in, one other thing for me, I do not know how it is for you, but if I eat oatmela in the morning and no Protein, I'm starving all day long, when you can, eat protein in the morning and see if it helps, Those carbs in that oatmeal will only make you hungry agai nsooner and you wil lcrave more carbs, not to mention oatmeal is a soft mushy food which will go through your pouch faster and you will be hungry again quicker. Hard Proteins first will make a difference in your hunger level later on.

Thanks to everyone who responded! I really appreciate it. I had no clue that oatmeal digested that fast. I figured since it was so thick it would take longer.

What would a few examples of Hard protien be...for breakfast food that is. I know I have a lot to learn but im trying!

eggs or no fat cottage cheese for me in the mornings. Although mushy it sticks with me MUCH longer.

And me too on the one week to kick in thing. I only have had one fill but it was wide open for a week then one morning...BAMMO.

Also, restriction is a funny thing...some days you have it...some days ya don't. It's not a contstant. Weird.

Somehow I just feel like I am doing something wrong. I get no signs of fullness so I stick with the 4oz rule, but it is not always possible to measure what you are eating. So then what?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
