Belated complication?

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit down today, and want to share my frustration here with some folks who might understand. I was banded on April 23. Since the surgery I have had some "digestive difficulties" which I chalked up to lactose intolerance. Those mushroomed into a full blown bacterial infection which took ten days to identify. My fever spiked, my electrolytes got dangerously low and I became dehydrated. I ended up at the emergency room twice in a five day period, before they finally determined that I had a c diff infection and started treating it.

I know that these things happen, but the fact is that I never had any digestive issues until I had this surgery (I had weight issues, not digestive issues .) In researching this infection, after the fact, it seems that the Prilosec that was prescribed for me after the surgery helped to make my gut very hospitable to this awful infection.

Don't misunderstand, I am still glad I had the surgery, but am not as trusting as I was a few months ago. It is disheartening to feel so weak after so much time has gone by, but that's the breaks.

Its a journey, that's for sure. I'm gonna make it, as we all are. Thanks for being here, April Bandsters!

Wow Kitty. I am glad to hear that you are ok. Thanks for posting this. This post may help someone else that may be going through the same thing. It is a journey. The more I read the post, the more educated I get. The surgeons do not explain all that you go through after getting a band. All most of us know is that the band will help you lose weight. Thank God for this forum and all who post here.

I wish you well on you journey.

Thanks so much to you, 2911Plans, and to you, Myturn2bhappy, for your words of support. Right now I'm having a bit of trouble staying on course, and your kind words help a lot. We will all make it to our goals!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
