Liquid diet, how do you do it?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 9 of my pre-op diet and still have the strength to tell about it.(haha) My biggest highlight of the day is to get to chew my Vitamin. Thank goodness for that. What a treat!:blushing:

The pre-op and post-op all liquid diet is the most difficult part of the lap band process. For me it was 21 days of nothing but liquids. Looking back, I'm amazed that I was able to get through it. Many bandsters are also trying to "detoxify" from caffeine, sugar, smoking, and other things that can interfere with your weight loss which can further compound the issue.

I gave up my caffeine and limited my sugar intake the week prior to going on the liquid diet and I think it helped me alot. I was a Diet Coke fanatic for 25+ years, so to get away from soda was quite a change of mindset.

The biggest motivator for me was to keep the ultimate goal in mind. I wanted the surgery terribly after gaining and losing tremendous amounts of weight over the years and knew this was my best chance for success. I will tell you now I don't regret it for a minute because I know I would be 50-60 lbs heavier than I am now if I hadn't of started this journey.

Good job, emjay, but for me, they will have to pry caffeine from my cold, dead lips!

I don't drink coffee so much, although I used to.

However, I am a tea addict, and I don't mean "herbal" teas. I would say that it is a hobby for me.

Green tea, assam, earl grey, oolong, white, Pu Erh, mmm.

I am on day 3 and to my surprise, it has not been too bad. My Dr. has me on up to 5 shakes a day and 2 cups of Veggies. I can also have sugar free Jello. I am not that hungry but the acid from the veggies is upset my stomach a bit. I have found that the Unjury chicken Soup is a wonderful change from the shakes. I only wish it could be hotter before the texture changes. But it helps to shake (pardon the pun) things up.

Yeah, UpperWestSide, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury products taste. I recall taking some Protein supplements several years ago and they were gritty and had a "cardboardy" taste and a bit of an aftertaste.

They were also hard to "dissolve."

But these Unjury products are great. They fast dissolve and have a pleasant taste.

Anyway, end of commercial! But I'm on day 5. . . 4 more to go!

I'm on day 11 of my pre-op liquid shakes...can't believe I've made it this far. I'm using Bariatric Advantage and they aren't tasting too bad. Just keeping my eye on June 23!! Can't believe all the different pre-op diets there are. Mine seems to be brutal. lol

:biggrin:Today I went in for my preop stuff at the hospital. I can tell you that I have not been on a scale since the doctors office last month. I am down 20 pounds  I am so happy. I feel good. I am going in to get my band on June 26th..they said you must really want this because most people gain weight before this surgery. I was so happy. The liquid diet does not even bother me anymore I have to force myself to eat now. Have a good weekend everyone.

I'm so envious! I am still very hungry most of the time. But, granted, it's just "habitual" eating that I miss.

What disappoints me is that after 5 days, I'm only down 2.5/3 pounds. Bummer. It feels like I should be down 20! LOL!

I was allowed only Clear Liquids and then Protein Shakes. So I lived off of broth, Jello, popsicles, and protien shakes for a very long time (10 days pre-op then 1 month post-op). It was rough for me. I was always hungry and always craving but seeing the number on the scale gradually geting smaller kept me motivated!

I just discovered the Unjury chicken broth, and wish I had found it sooner. Its a great way to boost your protien count. I wish I cood cook with it, but I have found that if I add it in at the end, it seems to work.

I started my liquid diet 4 days ago and I don' think I'm going to make it. I still have 10 days to go but it helps that my roommate and I are having surgery on the same day so there is no solid food in the house to temp us...

Julia,

Your stick-to-itness is inspiring. To stay on this diet since September is a sign of your determination. I take it the time factor is for insurance? It really shows you will make the banding work for you.

I am on day one of the pre-op diets, Protein drinks, GREEN salad only and Lean Cuisine for dinners. I'm not really looking forward to this phase, but I know I need to do it and I will. I'm also going to make sugar free Jello which is something I've never done. I guess I really am ready to make those necessary changes.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
