Lovenox injections--anyone have any problems?

Recommended Posts

So, I gave myself my last Lovenox injection today, I'm very excited. I hate shots. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone experienced any side effects from the shots? Not just common ones like bruising, etc, but anything more unusual? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Sandi. I was just curious because a few days after surgery, I experienced some tingling in my thigh and a little pain. I just thought it was the pinched nerve I have acting up, but I'm not 100% convinced. I guess if it doesn't get better by tomorrow, I'll call my doc.

Nothing major. Just the usual bruising, but I did notice that I was VERY emotional right after surgery. Songs on the radio or regular TV could make me outright cry. I wonder if it's just a side effect of the Lap-Band in general. Definitely call your Dr. if you're unsure, though.

Lovenox is one of the brand names of "low molecular weight heparin" or in laymens terms a blood thinner. It is the needle that is injected into your stomach just before surgery to prevent blood clots.

How come you have to do it? Usually after surgery people walk heaps for the pain so I wouldn't have thought you'd need something like that when you got home?

Most people dont have to have them after surgery. I am not sure why the original poster did. I happen to have an autoimmune disorder that makes me prone to clotting, so my rheumatologist wanted me to take them for a whole week post op. Luckily my surgeon talked her out of it (explaining how we are made to get up and walk right away) and I only had to do get the one before surgery and I had 2 more during my hospital stay.

I guess I shouldn't assume that most people had to have them. I thought since my doctor required it that most people were in the same boat. Anyway, my doctor has everyone undergoing bariatric surgery give themselves lovenox injections twice a day for 2 weeks to prevent blood clotting. Yes, I still had to walk everyday, but this was just a precautionary method. Anyway, glad it's over now.

My doctor is the same way. I had to get the shots also after surgery.

I believe it was more common with the gastric bypass surgery because it was much more invasive and a some people died from throwing a clot. So maybe some surgeons are being ultra cautious and having lap band patients do it to? Just a guess, but as long as you are taking a low dose of it and are not needle phobic (like me) then there is no harm.

Nope, no side effects for me....thank goodness! I was happy to do it, I had a blood clot in 2003 and was afraid of getting another one.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
