Stupid mistake 8-days post op!!

Hey guys! This is my first time poking around the forum and I've just read some stuff that really scared me. I am now eight days post-op and I've been doing liquids until today, when I mushed up two hard-boiled eggs with a fork and ate it. My mother had gastric bypass and she encouraged me doing this, and I thought it was okay since I felt absolutely no discomfort. My doctor said that during the second week I could graduate to non-clear liquids including creamy Soups, so I thought the mushy egg would be okay, but now I'm reading on here that any kind of solids before the five week mark are really bad and I'm super scared! I definitely won't be eating anything remotely solid again, but is there anyone else who did something like this? Did you damage your band because of it? :redface:

I guess my ultimate question is.....Were you not given any post-op diet instructions? Any literature at all regarding your after care and what is permissible to have during each of the post-op phases? If not call your surgeons office and ask for some, if so follow what they have given you. The dietary restrictions are not meant to be a punishment, they are there to protect you from hurting or damaging yourself or your band and to let it heal properly so that you can make the most of your new tool. By not following the rules you do put yourself at risk for complications.

Im gonna play devils advocate here.

Yes you should follow your doctors orders. It is possible it could of caused a complication but the truth is the opinions throughout the medical community on post op care is so completely different and across the board. I was on diced solids at 10 days due to allergic reaction 9 did get docs approval however) and they felt as if no complications would arise and they havent. Im not saying its a free pass for everyone then, but i would follow your docs orders as close as u can. Being banded 8 months I have come to realize my doc isnt God and while they have my best interest at heart, I know my body and ultimatly make the decisions and choices. do i think you hurt anything? NO now if you ate two double cheeseburgers I might be worried

My doctor did give me a chart with info about the post-op diet. It said I could have some mushy things by week 2, but I think the egg was more solid than the other stuff on the list. I just thought it was okay because I felt no pain, but now I know it isn't! I'm not going to do it again, I'm just really scared and worried now that I HAVE done it... :redface:

I've not been banded yet (June 1), but my daughter has and her doctor, Dr. Spivak in Houston, who is truly one of the leading doctors in this industry (on the original 14-member team of drs who introduced the procedure to the U.S.), well, he had my daughter on soft foods within 4-5 days (puddings, yogurt, running mashed potatos). He told her he wanted her to learn how to eat with her band as soon as possible. He's done 4k procedures. eggs might have been a little much. But every doctor is different. Mine is two week liquids, cream Soup, Protein shakes. But you'll know what you can eat and can't. It will let you know.

Thanks Chicamam & Pennreporter - that's really really reassuring, I'm freaking out a little right now!! Even though I felt fine when I ate the eggs, I'm not going to have any more solids until 5 weeks just to be safe... I just really hope I didn't already do damage. It's good to hear that others had some mushy stuff at this time and didn't damage their band because of it! I'm still kind of scared, but feeling a little better now.

I think you'll be just fine! I went onto mushy foods within 10 days instead of 14 and I'm doing just fine.

I am sure you will be OK, it's soft eggs, not a 2" thick bite of steak. Soft scrambled eggs, mashed egg salad and such are on my "mushy/soft food stage".

I am on my two week mark and I started my mushy a couple of days early due to some nausea complications. I've been able to eat soft scrambled eggs about 1/2 cup, oatmeal, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes and so forth. Don't freak yourself out, but if you ARE concerned do call your doctor.

I was told not to eat anything that causes peristalsis (digestion) and I am a firm believer to do only what your doc says and NOT what you read here. I read about people who cheated on their preop diet and got the band just fine, or didn't even HAVE a preop diet. SO I figured I could do that too. I lost 15 pounds doing my own thing and guess what? NO BAND because my liver didn't shrink.

So please call your doc, do what he tells you. Different docs have different styles of surgery, place the band a little differently etc. Each doc should know what is right for his or her own patients. My doc says what happens is people advance their diets too quickly, think they got away with it, then have a slip down the road and think "Why me!?"

Odds are you are ok but if you ate "ahead of the game", let your doc tell you that you're ok, not posters here (however well meaning we all may be!)

Hey bottle, yes you shouldn't have had it but don't worry too much - I'm also on day 8 so yay us lol and my instructions are mushy food on day 14 which is ages away . When I do go on those tho I was told to put whatever it is in a blender and if it's still too thick then thin it out with stock or milk depending on what it is - If the food is soft enough then theres no reason to blend it, like if it was a really soft poached egg. So if you want something again just try thinning it out with liquid. Good luck =)

Did your doctor tell you 5 weeks? Or is that what you read on here? I was able to eat mushy foods starting my second week and eggs are on that list. Eggs are a soft food so you should be ok. chicken is even on my soft foods list. I've heard of people being on liquids for two weeks and then onto mushy foods but not 5 weeks of liquids. If your doctor gave you a chart to follow then follow the chart and all should be well. Good luck and I wouldn't worry too much!

My doctor told me I should do Clear Liquids for 3 days, then from day 4-7 do full liquids (thin cream Soup strained), Protein shakes, drinkable yogurt (Keifer). . . then on my day 8 (which is today) I'm allowed to try some mushy/soft foods. If it goes well I can continue mushies, if not, do another few days of full liquids.

I had cottage cheese today and some blended garbanzo Beans w/liquid to make them smooth like yogurt consistency. I also chewed the cottage cheese because I'm trying to be overly cautious.

I also worried, because I see SO MANY people who are on liquids longer-- BUT-- My doc has done several bands, and he teaches other docs how to perform the surgery. He comes highly recommended. So I feel ok w/his recommendation of introducing mushies as long as I tolerate them well.

Therefore, I wouldn't worry too much about the fact that you had the eggs (as long as you didn't throw up)-- but from here on out, just make sure you get the eating plan from your doc. You'll likely be introducing some foods soon anyway. At least the "mushies" or soft foods. And chew things really well so they go down easily.

Someone may have mentioned this and i missed it - Do Not Follow Your Mothers Advise Based on Bypass. I'm sure she means well but in my preop class there were bypass and band people and the post surgery diets were very different. For example Band paitents strained Soup don't eat the solids bypass strained soup eat the solids not the liquid. Go by what your Dr. gave you.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      Soooo I am coming to a realization

Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
