Today is my preop Appt...Tomorrow start liquid diet..

Recommended Posts

I'm really nervous about this liquid diet. I think it will actually get me in the "zone" and prepare me both mentally and physically for weight loss. My surgeon told me about a case he had a few weeks back where a man didn't follow the preop diet as prescribed and his liver was so fatty it actually BROKE when they tried to lift it....WHAT?!?!?! Seriously, if that's not a scare tactic I dont know what is. No broken livers here!!!!

Well...I'll keep my fingers crossed. Hope everyone has a great day!

Ooh, scary story -- broken liver. I had my pre-op appointment yesterday, and my surgeon was very nonchalant about the pre-op diet. I have to do all SlimFast for 7 days. He believes that if tells his patients to do more than 7 days, they are more likely to cheat.

Good luck to you!!! And don't worry about broken livers any more.

I wish I could do slimfast. He started me on Optifast 800 for TWO WEEKS! Not only that it is SO EXPENSIVE...27 shakes (the size of kids juice boxes) are $88. Not thrilled, but still excited.

You are kidding me!!! OMG! I had no idea they were so small and so expensive. Well, hopefully they will taste good!

Wow! That is expensive. Just a thought... Does it have to be Optifast or was that just a suggestion? Have you tried comparing nutrient information with other brands that are not as expensive?

I would ask about switching to another shake...

I spoke with the dietician about it and she told me the requirements (ratio of carbs to Protein was my doctor's) and then when I went in to pick up my pre-op instructions they said "ok which flavor of Protein powder do you want? It's $100" (or whatever the exact cost was - it was expensive!) and just let her know that the dietician already told me the requirements and I had ordered a huge thing of it for $20 from a website..... She said oh okay, that's cool.

And that was the end of it!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
