I am two weeks out from surgery. I see the doc for follow up tomorrow. I have lost 12 lbs. But seriously liquids only ...... My family and life are too complicated. I cant watch someone without a nibble or two. They all go to dinner what do I do? some times Soup but then what soup only goes so far. My sister is harping at me.(Getting old) she is afraid i will hurt the band/pouch. I was careful the first week but then added one scrambled egg w/ cheese. then mashed potatoes. then tow prawns w/ tartar. then egg foo yung. rice with gravy. cracker with cheese spread. only an ounce or two at a time /a fork full then wait 5 min. I take tiny bites and savor it. But am I hurting anything? I think I am being careful and I am losing weight.........HELP ME...........

The rules are in place because during the surgery, the band is stitched into place with the stomach. Liquids don't take much work from the stomach so it's not churning and moving, so the stitches have time to heal and the stomach can heal into place. All the churning and moving might keep that from happening well.

I say all of the above because maybe if you know the REASON for the rules, it will help you follow them?

Good luck

Hi Ajack,

I was told by my nutritionist that it is very important to stick to the required food plan, for me it was just 3 weeks. The reasons were stretching the new small pouch and possibly making the band slip, for these good reasons I stuck with what I was told. Its great that you've lost weight, from what I have learned and seen on the boards losing weight is just a bonus, the most important thing is to let your body heal during this liquid period. Good Luck! Tracy

My doc says liquids for one week, mushies for two, and then solids slowly incorperated. I think you will be ok if you eat mushies like eggs or mashed potatoes but I'd give up the rice. Good luck!

Listen to your sister!!

your post op instructions are there for a reason, if you eat solids too soon before your band has had time to anchor in and set into place you can risk your band slipping. The digestion process for solids and mushies causes alot of churining and movement in your stomach, movement your band does not need or want right now. You need to heal and let your band set in place.

You got the band to loose weight so please let it heal and you will be rewarded later. Safe foods are sugar free popsicles, sf pudding, chew and spit if you have to have a taste. Sorry but it's the truth.

Seems like a consultation with a counselor that specializes in food/eating issues is in order. Your surgeon's office should be able to recommend someone. Make haste.

Personally, I am too scared to risk dislodging my band. I paid too much and want too much for it to work to screw it all up on a whim. Just the idea that if I overeat or eat something I shouldn't might make me throw up and dislodge the band so that I will have to pay for another surgery (not to mention go through the whole process again) keeps me from being anything but extra careful and attentive to what I eat.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
