Determined, good luck with your appeal. I too had to appeal. Sounds like you've already sent yours in, but if its not too late, I would suggest getting letters of support from your doctors.

I wrote 2 letters from me, one medical, one emotional and then went to each of my doctors (gyn, gastrointerologist, podiatrist, GP) and asked for letters of support and then submitted the entire thing as a package. It certainly got their attention, the ins rep called me directly to tell me they decided to approve me. I've shared my letters with dozens of folks on LBT and would be happy to do so again if you or anyone else would like to use them as a template.

Keep us posted and good luck!

do you think you could help me out? i just found out today that i was denied! i have no clue why. i meet everything needed for tricare to approve me!!!! when i called them they said it could be because they do not have enuff info! BLA BLA! anyway i called my doctor and the surgeon who will do the lapband to help me appeal this. my quistion for you is.. did you have to wait the whole 90 days to hear something? and do you mind if i look at your letters that you wrote. may help me out. thanks so much. i really want to fight this so anything will help! thanks

Determined- I'm in El Paso/Ft Bliss too! I just went to the PCM today and they sent in my referral. I'm 240 lbs (which puts me at 100lbs overweight for the low end range for my body type) My BMI is 39, I have high cholesterol, high BP, and severe joint pain. What do you all think about my chances??

Determined- please keep me updated on your journey, and any advice/things to do would be great!!

Thanks!

Rubytuesday-- I personally think you have good chances of getting approved. As long as you meet their requirements which is 100 pounds overweight with one of their comorbidities (high bp)you shouldnt have a problem. Just make sure it is all documented and its all sent in, that way you wont have to appeal which can take up to 90 days, thankfully my appeal only took 30 days to be approved.

Also, have you registered online at triwest? I did that right after my pcm sent in my first referall for the surgeon consult and it was approved within 2 days.

Goodluck!! Feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions! :D

DeterminedWifey- Thanks so much for the info. Apparently the referral has to go through the chief of surgery before being sent to tricare?? Also, I found out that Tricare Prime is referring people off post now. Have you been assigned to a surgeon yet? I'm so happy they approved you, and good luck!

My referral was also sent through the chief of surgery first but it really didnt take long to get the approval. I did have to follow up because my pcm "forgot" to send in the request.

And yes they are referring people off post (thankfully lol) They assigned me to a surgeon but i had already done my research prior so i changed it to dr.applebaum.

This coming week will be busy, they've scheduled me for psych eval on monday, nutrition on wednesday and surgery consult on thursday!!

Also are you getting the lapband? I decided on the gastric bypass, even though this is a lapband forum i recieved more helpful info on here than any other site!

Let me know how it goes!!

Gosh, good luck! That does sound busy. But thank goodness they're getting you in quick. The surgeon's office that I spoke to where Tricare Prime is referring people said they do everything in house. So that'll save time on appointments. I'm just dying to get my referral and get this thing started!

I am going for the lapband, mostly because I have a couple family members that went with gastric bypass, and didn't have the best time with it. Plus, I have a 17 month old daughter who demands mama be available, so I don't have too much recovery time open. How come you decided on the gastric bypass? If you don't mind me asking! Again, good luck!

well i decided on the bypass because i liked the idea of a "permanent" tool to help with the weight loss, and the fact i wouldnt be comfortable with something foreign in my body :o and im not going to lie, the drastic weight loss is appealing as well.

So what kind of problems did your family members encounter with the gastric bypass if you dont mind me asking?

you know, i don't know the exact details, but they both had leaks that were eventually fixed, but I remember it being a pretty big deal. and they both gained back all their weight, but i think that's a risk you always run if you aren't ready for the life style change.

keep me updated!

My mom had gastric bypass and she's been a mess ever since. Her intestines now have adhesions in them (since they cut and reroute your intestines) and stuff gets stuck in them. She usually ends up in the hospital with it about once ever 6 months. The rest of the time she deals with it on her own.

Because of that, every day of her life she's either throwing up or diarrhea. Her quality of life is now what it should be.

I know a couple other people who've had it and each of them have gained their weight back.

For me, having my stomach cut and my intestines removed seemed way more invasive than a "forien object" in my body. My sister commented on that too, but no one ever questions when someone needs a pacemaker, or if you break your leg and need pins to put it back together, or many other situations where there is a forien object in our bodies.

Anyway, that's just me. They both have their pluses and minuses, you just have to figure out what will work best for you.

Best of luck to you!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
