Just banded & have an appetite for solids

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 3-24-09. I have not felt sick, but I'm very worried because I'm hungry and have eaten. I've measured my food and am not exceeding 4 oz and am satisfied, but I'm scared that I'm on the road to failure, after all it's only day 4. I plan on calling my Dr. on Monday, but right now I feel panicked. I have no nausea and no vomiting, on the contrary I feel great. But shouldn't I have no appetitie and have little interest in food. I'm hoping that it's just a matter of an adjustment and then things will get better. I'm disappointed in myself and how it's going so far. I wanted this so bad & I just feel that I'm not feeling at all what is described in my book.

I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU! I got banded on the 19th and was told that i was hungry because my stomach isnt swollen and after the first fill I should feel more restricted. Hopefully thats what will happen. i am also able to eat more than 3/4c of food....I dont know what to tell you but I thought it might help you to know that someone else was in your shoes!

It's important not to eat during the time your doctor wants you on liquids because your stomach is healing and scar tissue is forming around the band. It's that scar tissue that holds in place and helps prevent slippage.

Obviously, you can't do anything about it now, but please don't do it again just because nothing horrible happened right away. You don't want to have slippage 2-3 years from now...

Oh and you guys are in "Bandster Hell" which is when you aren't supposed to be eating but you haven't got restriction yet. It's tough, but post in the Post-Op Support section and I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas for how to get through it.

I agree 100000% with Macmadame! Your stomach churns to digest the food and that can really mess with your band placement. It's something my surgeon addressed in the seminar! He said if we couldn't follow the post op diet of liquids, etc, then do NOT get the band. Many of us are very hungry post op. I was! You just have to tough it out for a few weeks! Please call your surgeon on Monday and let him know; he may want to do some tests to make sure you're ok.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
