Either stuck or no restriction

Recommended Posts

I am not sure what is going on with my band. I had my second fill 3/3 and had amazing restriction at first. Now I find that I either get stuck or I am able to eat a more than I should and I don't get full, which leads to me grazing.

In the morning, oatmeal, cream of wheat, mushies are all fine, but other things... stuck. Later in the day, the band tends to loosen up a lot and I can eat whatever. This is very frustrating because I am able to eat when I shouldn't be eating as much. In the evening I feel like I need another fill, but in the morning/early afternoon, I feel like I need a little taken out... Anyone else have this, and if so, what did you do for it??

I am experiencing the same thing, and haven't done anything yet. I am at 6ml in a 10ml APS band and am scheduled for a small fill next week. I am going to hang around the general area for a while afterwards just in case.

I've heard from more than one person that their bands are tighter in the morning than the rest of the day. Their solution is to drink hot tea or coffee and have a hot Breakfast, like oatmeal. I just have a SlimFast Low Carb (20 grams of Protein vs. the 15 grams in the "High Protein" version -- go figure) for breakfast and it goes down just fine.

I too have this problem. Can't eat much all day long and then eat way more than I should and things that I shouldn't eat in the evening. I have been bouncing around about 4 lbs---up and down, up and down. I went for my 6 mos check up and the Dr thought that I was too tight. So he loosened me up a bit and things aren't getting stuck as much...but I still have the same routine. Only coffee in the a.m. at first. Then by mid=morning something soft, yogart, cottage cheese etc. lunch is small and intermittenly sticks. Then by the time I get home...I am like an empty vat. Everythings goes in just fine. Still bouncing around with those 4 lbs too. I work out several times a week and could do a better job there but all in all I am quite frustrated.

That's what I have done too. I have been drinking an EAS low carb, high Protein shake every morning. I have also discovered that when I drink something warm, I am able to eat more without getting stuck.

I am still learning about my band too.

I guess this is rather common. I can't get another fill appt til 4/20, so I guess by then I will have a better idea what is going on. I wonder if I was a little tighter if it would keep it from going through and maybe it wouldn't get stuck. This morning actually was the first time I could actually feel my coffee stopping at the band, and then going on through. So for whatever reason, I am really tight today.

Irish 76, I understand the frustration. I lost 17 pounds before my surgery... 3 more pounds 3 weeks after surgery, and nothing else for the next 5 weeks. I thought I was finally to restriction, and now.... *sigh*

Now I am eating no where near my caloric daily intake because of the getting stuck issue, which has caused the weight loss to skid to a stop too... :smile2:

Hopefully someone will reply who has had this and had something done that took care of it. Or has some suggestions. I always have a cup of coffee in the morning, but still only mushies will go down. And seems like if I get stuck, then I can't eat anything after that except more mushies...

Damomb, it really sounds like you are too tight. You may need a little taken out. They won't do a fill until 4/20, but will they see you for an unfill. If you are getting stuck and can't consume the correct amount of calories, you definitely don't need another fill.

I definitely may need an unfill, but I am afraid that I will lose what restriction I do have:sad:. Waiting for restriction is a bummer and then to finally have it but with the stuck issue... it is frustrating. I will be honest with my doc when I go in (but will probably just wait til the 20th) and if he feels I need a little unfill, that will be fine. It isn't like I am not eating anything, but I am not eating like I feel I should be eating. Too much mushies in the daytime and then able to eat too much in the evening. Thanks for your reply crzytchr :smile2:

An unfill of as small an amount as .5cc could make all the difference in the world. It's worth discussing, and, honestly, if you do need an unfill, the alternative to not doing it is being miserable. If you can't take in enought Protein, your hair can start to fall out and there are other problems that could arise as well.

Thank you so much for your reply. I agree. It is miserable getting stuck constantly. If a little unfill is going to make all the diff, then I definitely want it. I am a little impatient (well... maybe a lot impatient) and my slow weight loss progress has me a little discouraged. I guess being desperate enough to have surgery makes the living with being stuck seem like its just part of the package, and I know it isn't. I have had two very large fills, so I probably do need a slight unfill.

Again, thank you so much for your reply.

Heck, I'm impatient too! I was upset because I didn't lose anything in the weeks right after surgery. I knew I was healing but heck, I wanted instant results, LOL. Good luck!

Lots of thoughts here....

It's normal to be tight in the AMs.. There are different opinions on how to resolve the "can only get soft foods down in the AMs, can eat anything in the PMs." Some doctors tell you to white knuckle it. Dr. Curry on OH suggests doing your fill at 5PM so you have good restriction in the evenings yet you cannot eat at all in the mornings.

Getting full... this is the fat mentality rearing it's ugly head. Did you know that naturally thin people don't like the full feeling? They eat until they are no longer hungry. WE eat until we are stuffed full. A good guide would be this, while you are eating really think about your hunger level:

If you are hungry eat two more bites,

If you are satisfied stop eating,

If you are full you ate too much.

When your restriction is not great drink ice Water before eating. Cold usually tightens people up a bit. I am sleeved now (revision from band to sleeve) and even with a sleeve that's about the only thing that affects my restriction. If I drink something hot/warm I see no difference. But if I drink something ice cold before a meal I can only eat about half of what I usually do. My food quantity is already very limited so I don't drink anything cold before a meal. But if I was trying to lose I would.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
