Protein shakes - GAG, YUCK, PUKE, EEEEKKKK

Recommended Posts

I have yet to find one that I actually like. Or let me say one that is high enough Protein to do any realy good. The only thing that I can drink now that I actually like is the "Carnation Instant Breakfast - Sugar Free". Those I can drink and don't gag on. Anything else, I'm just having a really hard time with.

I think I was reading some where on some ones post about a powder Protein that is tasteless???? Is there such a thing? Where can I find it?

I can start eating Beans and such this coming Friday which will help my protein count, but until then I'm just seriously lacking in that department.

High Protein Slim-Fast taste better to me than the CIB, I think also has more portein. I have GeniSoy Protein Powder that is natural but I don't like the way it mixes. I also add 1/3c of dry non fat milk. This with the shakes adds same as an additional cup of skim milk. Works well when you can have oatmeal. Good luck!

Hi,

I drink WonderSlim chocolate shake. It's called Weight and Inches. It takes great. 7 packets per box, mixes with Water, and has 29g of Protein in each packet. It has 200 calories per packet. Each packet makes about an 16z drink. I bought mine online from Diet Direct. You can look up Protein Shakes on Google and find it. It runs about $15.00 dollars a box. The cost is sort of high, but the taste is so worth it. It also comes in vanilla and maybe strawberry, but the chocolate is so good, who needs the other two.

Regards,

ikerry

I liked the Carnation SF, Slim Fast (whichever one was low in carbs), and Boost Diabetic (low in carbs). I really don't mind the Protein Shakes, in general, but those were my favorites. I still keep Boost in the fridge for after fills, and for a quick Breakfast on occasion.

Hi! Have you tried the "Nectar" line by Syntrax? I have the caribbean cooler, it's like a pina colada flavor. I blend it with ice, 1 banana, and 100% Dole fruit juice. They have other flavors that sound really good. The powder itself is 90 calories, 0 carbs, and 23g. Protein.

Special K Protein Water mixes are good too. If the taste isn't quite right for you, add more Water and throw in some crystal light. I think it's sweet enough though.

I also use Designer Whey's "Natural" (Not vanilla, but Natural flavor.) protein powder. This is unflavored, still has that mild milk taste to it, but very slight. It hides easily in instant pudding mixes or Soups, especially cream of potato or cream of chicken.

Don't be afraid to spice up your protein shakes a little. Someone suggested Creamers -- I have tried it, and it's pretty good. Sometimes a teaspoon of Nestle Quick helps. If you like chai tea, you can find chai spice in your spice aisle and add some of that with a little Splenda or sweetener of your choice. Don't settle for protein out of the box -- be a little creative, and you might find a combination you like.

Congratulations on your surgery!!!!

You should try Syntrax Nectar Sweets in chocolate truffle. I like it cold and warm. To make it warm you have to mix it with a little cold milk or Water and then add the warm milk or water to it. I learned some tricks from the ladies at bariatriceating.com. I also love Labrada RTD Lean Body in Vanilla and strawberry. I purchased mine from vitaminshoppe.com because it was cheaper and they had free shipping at the time. Also try not to smell your Protein Drinks before you drink them. They all smell really nasty to me. Good luck to you.

I like Slim Fast low-carb best. The only one that I really can't tolerate is Muscle Milk light - I drank maybe two of them and pitched the rest, they were so nasty!

Skeeterbait8,

I used EAS Protein drinks from Walmart, I think they have 17 grams Protein, there are two different ones, the other one has higher protein count but I never tried it. I kept mine in the fridge, I did not drink it all at once. It did tend to give me diarreah if I did, so I sipped on it every time I went by the fridge.

Like the other person said, I also used K20 protein packets for Water. I liked the tea and the Kiwi/strawberry. Also at Walmart.

I see you are in the early stages, once you can do mushies... Try cottage cheese and egg salad for protein. I put Mccormicks season all and bacon bits on the cottage cheese for little differnt taste.

Later, I put cottage cheese on my lettuce salad for added protein, also cut down on the amount of dressing I use.

Ewwww, Muscle Milk tasted like strained sweat socks and bile to me. I get shivers just thinking about it.

I really think the Protein manufacturers should sell single-serving powder samples so you can road test these things before investing in the big canister... but then again, maybe that's how they make their money. ha ha ha

I wouldn't doubt it one bit. Now here I sit with a HUGE tub of GNC whey Protein ($40+tax) and well I'm not using it! Now if I had been able to "try it out" before buying so much and had liked it that would be different.

Anybody interested in a HUGE jar of chocolate GNC whey Protein Complex - 81 serving size (less 2 servings). $25+shipping cost!

OK>>> Don't everyone jump on this at once!:sneaky::lol:

What was it about it that you didn't like? Was it just the standard Protein taste or something else? Have you tried doctoring it up a little bit first, like a spoonful of Nestle Quick or a spoonful of Peanut Butter? Are you using milk or Water to mix it? Maybe if we put our heads together, we can find a way for you to still get your money's worth out of it.

I discovered quickly that 1% milk was not that much less healthier than skim, and once I switched back to 1%, it cut a lot of that protein taste -- since skim milk tastes like it too, so it had been doubling that taste instead of hiding it. lol

I don't know what it was. All I know is that when I get the glass close to my mouth and try to drink I automaticly get the gag reaction! There must be something in the smell even that I just can't stand. I've not tried to "doctor" this brand/flavor. I use 2% milk. Just can't get down to the 1% or skim. I was raised on the REAL stuff and have gotten used to that taste.

AT this point I'll take the loss.

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury sells one that is tasteless. I have added it to Soups before and been very pleased with it. It is simply called "unflavored."

I would call them and ask what their return/exchange policy is. Sometimes they allow for that.

I know that when I have bought big jugs of powder stuff at other places (like Trader Joe's), I asked if I could return it if I couldn't stand it.

Speaking of Trader Joe's, I don't know if you have one near you but they have a Protein drink in a can that has HIGH Protein. I got a few for my liquid phase before and after my surgery and liked it pretty well. They only had vanilla and chocolate, though it may come in more flavors. It was a bit thick, but the flavor wasn't bad. I don't usually like vanilla drinks, so I would use the vanilla one and flavor it with pumpkin and spices in a blender. It was very good.

I was in the same boat and gagged on all of them but now I really like the Atkins shakes. They don't have that smell and are not so thick and gunky. To me they taste like chocolate milk. They have 16 grams of Protein and only 1 gram of carbs in an 11 ounce shake. I've found them at every grocery store I've been to here.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
