JUNE 2009 Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my surgury on 06/15/09 and am down 70lbs. I'll be honest the first 3 months nothing was happening, so I tried the low carb diet. I figured I couldn't eat bread, Pasta, rice which are all carbs, so why not try the low carb. I've notice since I incorporated this w/my LAP-BAND® I've been doing much better!!

I've lost over 70 lbs and low carb was absolutely the only way I could do it. I did allow some high carb days, but overall it was the high Protein that filled my pouch and kept the hunger at bay. Carbs either get stuck or they're high calorie sliders. Either way, not helpful.

It has been many months since I checked in here but since we are doing roll call I wanted to jump back in. I was banded on June 30, 2009 and am down about 63 pounds now. I am both thrilled and excited with this. Sure I wanted it to be more. But I am feeling so good about my progress and just physically feeling so so strong that I won't complain. Life is good.

Hello Everyone,

I decided to stop watching the Biggest Looser and hoping for those results. Not realistic for me.

Not realistic for anyone--there's nothing real about "reality" shows like that. You deserve better than to use them as a yardstick for your success. Sorry, got a little preachy there I know...

Had my surgery 6/8/09, down 90 lbs, my dr and I are both very happy with my progress so far. But the last 2 months or so have been very slow with the weight loss, and lately I've been having a lot of stuck issues and painful "sliming attacks" - some lasting over 90 minutes. I don't know why, I haven't been eating anything differently... it's like all of a sudden my band became more sensitive. It's been pretty frustrating. I'm supposed to have my third fill in a couple of weeks, but I'm thinking that's only going to lead to even more issues with stuckage and such, so I don't know what to do. Has anyone else esperienced a sudden change with their band's sensitivity? Right now I've decided to just do as many liquids and soft foods as possible to cut down the potential of issues. But hopefully this new sensitivity isn't permanent... sigh.

Wow! Gemini, I could have written your post! I too have lost 90 lbs and am very pleased with my results so far. The last month's weight loss, though, has been very slow fro me also. I too have had a lot of stuck and painful sliming attacks (every day at least one or more meals a day for about a month!). I keep thinking I've just eaten too fast, didn't chew enough, was holding Water, hadn't drank enough water, had food that was too hot/cold/spicy...etc! I was just fine and then all of a sudden--just like you said--I can't seem to eat anything except yogurt, pudding, or Soup. I actually can't take it anymore. I have an appointment to have a slight unfill this coming Monday. If I were you, I wouldn't get that fill you have scheduled; I can't imagine you'll be happy with it. If my doctor has any good insights into why everything was fine until about a month ago, I'll let you know. I'm so looking forward to being able to eat again without wondering whether or not what I ate will be staying down...

Awwww!! Well, I'm so sorry you're going through it too, but am slightly relieved to know that it's not just ME that it's happening to!! Please, if you can share any insight that your dr may have, that would be great... I'm really not sure what to do at this point... good luck with your appt!!

Gemini, Are you still drinking all of your 64oz of Water daily? I know that I haven't--and am lucky if I get even 1/2 of that most days. There seems to be a correlation for me between the times I've hardly drank any water and the times I'm unable to keep most things down--and the reverse also seems to be true (more water = less stuck/sliming episodes). I thought I'd see if you are still drinking all of your water or not--maybe water consumption could be a connection to our sudden problems? Willowcat

I'm actually not either!! lol, i think we are the same person!! Somedays I'll spend 8 hours at work and only get through a 16 oz water bottle. I think it has to do with the fact that I've been getting hungrier between meals (hence the need for the upcoming fill), so I've been having little Snacks more often throughout the day (healthy snacks, not anything I shouldn't be having - usually either nuts or string cheese), but then I'm afraid to drink 30 mins before or after, so that cuts down on the available drinking time. Maybe this week I will take a different approach and instead of having those extra little snacks I will just drink water instead and see what that does. I will try anything at this point to help cut down the sliming!! Thank you for the tip willowcat!!

Gemini, I'm going to do the same thing--drink water when I feel like a little bite to eat. We can run a little experiment together. I remember RestlessMonkey said something once about drinking water vs. not drinking water having an effect on how you could feel different levels of "tightness" on any given day. I've never been much of a water drinker so when I was drinking my 64oz it was a real push for me to actually do it. I've gotten "lazy" when it comes to the water, but if water = no sliming/vomiting then I will certainly be 100% more motivated to drink all my water every day! I'm still going to the doctor tomorrow--just to make sure that this past month of sliming and vomiting didn't damage anything--also, to get his imput and thoughts about why I've had so many problems lately. OMG I sure hope something as simple as drinking all my water fixes everything! I'll keep you posted. Willowcat

Oh yes, I would also be so incredibly relieved if we could just solve our troubles by drinking more water!! Too easy to be true though?? I guess we'll find out!! :o Good luck tomorrow!! Yes, please keep me updated with how your appt goes!

Alas, Gemini, nothing earth-shattering came out of my doctor's visit. He said that he didn't think water-drinking or not had anything to do with feeling too tight or not. He did think that my stoma could have gotten irratated by the medication that I take. He said that a small unfill can do wonders. He took out .5 cc and I almost immediately felt better! It's been a real relief to be able to eat again. Hope everything works out on your end. Willowcat

I'm glad you're feeling better since your unfill, that's great news! Interestingly enough, I've been very focused on my Water intake the whole week, have been drinking at least twice as much per day as I was the last several weeks, and I haven't had any issues with sliming or stuckage. I don't know if it's just a coincidence but I'm going to stick with it until it's proven wrong! :bored:

Gemini, "Stick with what works" is what I say...so glad you had a stuck/slime-free week! :bored: Even though my doctor didn't think there was anything to the Water vs. no water theory, I know that there seems to be a connection for me...anyways, drinking more water can only be a good thing. Are you going to go ahead now and get that fill that you have scheduled? Good luck. Willowcat

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
