alternatives to protein shake?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded on 3/5 and have been on a full liquid diet since Sunday. I am supposed to drink 4 Meal Replacement shakes a day plus 2 other liquid meals. The problem is I have been drinking carnation instant bf made with 1% milk and must be somewhat lactose intolerant, since I am having terrible intestinal symptoms (gas) and bloating. Does anyone have any sugggestions for alternatives that won't cause those side effects?

I do have whey Protein that I could add to stuff if that will work.

I really have been good at sticking to the program and have 8 more days of full fluids, but I cannot stand the side effects.

Thanks, Mary

I was banded on the 3rd. My doctor told me I would be very gassy due to having air filled into my stomach for the surgery. I had a follow up yesterday and told him I was still having alot of gas and he said it was totally normal. So I think you might be gassy no matter what for a bit.

The Carnation shakes have 4 grams of Fiber per shake, at least mine do. If you're not use to Fiber, that might be it.

Unless your doctor has a problem with it, the whey Protein could be a great substitute.

I have had some milk issues since my surgery also (exact reaction you are having). I can take small amounts ok, but not a glass. I drink the Atkins Advantage shakes and they don't give me any problems. I have one every day for Breakfast. I like the chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. They are not cheap... but we are worth it!! Good luck to you!! Becky

Same thing happend to me, but during the pre-op phase. I started mixing mine with Lactaid skim milk, I am not lactose intollerant but since switching, I haven't had the gas issues. Could be worth a try!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
