Whey protein vs. Soy protein

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I am a little more than a month away from my surgery. Last night I went to GNC to check out somethings as I have to do a 10 day pre op diet. I bought a variety of things. Nice thing about GNC is that you can take it back if you try and don't like it. There are so many different things to choose from. The sales clerk was really helpful. Anyway, one of the brands I got was Isopure. I got the clear liquid Protein drink along with the powdered you mix. It was 50 grams of Protein and zero carbs!!! I mixed it with light vanilla soy milk, and I have to admit it was pretty good. I was shocked. I must say I was not the least bit excited to try this. I bet it would really be good mixed with some fresh fruit or yogurt!!

Anyway, just thought I would share this with everyone!

The powder I bought was from Wal-Mart. $8.00 for 14 servings. Brand - Advant Edge.

This is the one I bought ( Soy) vanilla flavored and I enjoy it, I use skim milk with a bananna , lots of ice then blend, YUMMY, 20 grams of Protein per serving...

I was never into portein drinks since I hated to use my calories on liquids but my mornings are tight and if I do not do it, I find I can not get in 60 grams of Protein like a bandster should so I started this recently, but one thing I have noticed is it gives me gas by the afternoon.

Update: I got the 100% whey protien from GNC and now that I mix it with Carb Countdown milk the consistancy doesn't bother me as much (never thought I would drink milk again but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do) Between the powder and the milk I come out at 31g of protien per shake (30g is the most your body will absorb at one time so this works out perfectly)

I looked at the clear Isopure - and I guess if you drank half in the morning and half at night it would work well but the powder was about double the cost of the whey protien and seemed like kind of a waste as 30g is all I need in one sitting.

Thanks for the pudding suggestion. I have some SF FF Cheesecake pudding I may throw in to my shake to make a chocolate cheesecake shake - Yum!

I have been using Carb Solutions French Vanilla (my husband accidentally mixed it with skim milk the first time and I felt like I was drinking cake batter), and a whey Protein called Body Fortress (chocolate). We got the Body Fortress at Wal-Mart for $11.97 for a 2 pound canister, which is about 30 servings. It has 20g of protein per serving and it is EXCELLENT!!!! Tastes just like chocolate milk :-)

I purchased they Whey Tech from Vitamin Shop - 17 grams mixed with Water. The chocolate is great - not think though - but it tastes just lika a YooHoo. The vanilla and strawberry leave a little to be desired, but if you use a banana, ice and skim milk with the strawberry it's great. The chocolate - 1 scoops, 1 C skim milk, 1 tblsp. Peanut Butter and 1 c ice - you have a great Peanut Butter cup. The vanilla with orange juice, ice and skim milk with 2 tblspoons of low fat cool whip - this is very good also.

I was going to try out the Chocolate from Wal-Mart - glad to hear the good ratings.

I buy the whey Protein Powder (isolate) from a fitness center. It has 60g's of Protein in one serving. I mix it with skim milk and have it for Breakfast. I tastes great! I think someone had mention that all Protein Drinks have about the same amount of protein but they do not. I have checked many places...GNC, costco, Walgreens, Walmart and so on. I only drink one glass a day and it works perfectly for me. The extra energy is a plus too!

Most of the Whey Proteins today are engineered to be a kind of time release so you don’t get the entire 30 or 40 grams all at once. Protein is important to weight loss because it produces gasses when being broken down by your body to be utilized; these gasses burn tons of calories and render a lot of the carbs consumed less potent.

For guys out there, soy Protein is kind of arguable. If you don't have very much, there's nothing to worry about. However, it tends to produce higher levels of estrogen in guys.

For whatever it's worth.

My favorite is Syntrax nectar. I'm one of those people who can't stand thick shakes so soy is out for me. Syntrax has a great latte flavor I love you can mix with Water or milk. The lemonade and iced tea flavors are great too. Haven't tried vanilla or chocolate.

I also like a vanilla kind called ProZone. For some reason I just love the almost malted milk flavor. The problem is that it's fairly high in calories.

The Jay Robb stuff is reasonably good too.

If you go to bariatriceating.com you can order a sample pack which is great - you can try several out first.

Lastly, the latest stuff I've bought and loved is from New Lifestyle Diet. The puddings are yummy, I love the hot capuccino, and both the oatmeal and the sloppy joe mix are great and they utilize the band. I don't know why since it's fairly mushy but the sloppy joe mix fills me up as much as meat does, I really like it. The shakes I don't love quite as much.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
