Discouraged

Recommended Posts

I seem to be stuck at one weight and not moving at all. I am exercising, making the right food choices, and yet the scale is not moving at all. I am getting very discouraged and disappointed. I am also getting tired of eating the same things, even when I try new recipes. I have no idea what to do now since I have come this far - lost almost 40 lbs. I don't have an appointment to get a fill for another 2 weeks. Help!

1.) What are you eating? Weight loss can stall if you are getting too many calories AND if you are not getting enough.

2.) You say you are eating the same things, What do you mean by that? I eat a variety of foods, pretty much everything I ate pre-band except processed and starchy carbs. Eating the same thing every day can cause a plateau in weight loss, switch it up a bit.

3.) Are you exercising? Are you getting enough Water? Are you following the bandster rules and only eating when hungry and not eating between meals? Are you eating solid food that stays in your pouch longer than mushies and liquids?

4.) Are you getting full on less than 1 cup of food and staying full for several hours? If not you may need another fill, see if you can move your appointment up.

If all of the above are not issues causing your weight loss to slow then it just may be a simple plateau. They suck but most of us hit them from time-to-time through our journey.

If I am on a plateau, and I am now...I eat more for a few days then eat less for a few days....and it sometimes helps me lose more weight. Not a lot of calories either way maybe 200.

I ate more last week due to the baby's Christening and less this week so I hope to have a few pounds off by the end of the week, been the same weight for 2 weeks now.

I just go one day at a time...not think ahead too much. I am about 2/3rds to my goal weight and the last 3rd is the hardest to lose I think. So if I make goal weight by August 7th I will be very very happy.

I was once told during a Weight Watchers meeting that eating the same foods can cause you to plateau. Try mixing it up. I read where you said you'd tried new recipes, but even if the foods are the same, you need to add spice to your life and shake your diet up a little.

Try eliminating a food group temporarily. Get rid of bread for a week, or meat. That should "shock" your body enough into losing weight. Then when you add it back, it should keep right on losing, so long as your portions are correct. I dont know if that's medically sound advice, but it's worked for me in the past.

Man, do I understand discouragement! I was banded 12/2/08 and immediately lost 15 pounds. At 4 weeks post op, the weight loss came to a screeching halt. I have had 2 fills for a total of 1 cc, but have not had any consistent restriction. I've lost 5 more pounds since the 1st fill, but I've been hungry and struggled with what to eat since then. I exercise at least 1 hour every day, so I'm not sedentary. I'm really scared that the band is not going to work for me or that I'm going to screw up this opportunity.

Should I eat only Protein? I've seen where some people return to liquids like they did immediately post op.

Thanks for your help.

Anne

Anne,

What you are experiencing is perfectly normal. It takes a little while to build up to the right restriction and as you build up, you often lose weight causing the band to get looser...don't worry and be patient, you'll get there!

I agree that eating more when the scale is not moving helps. I add something different and maybe a little more of it for a few days and I am SHOCKED at how well it works. It also reminds me that maybe I have cut myself to LOW on calories and that will sabotage you too.

Good~Luck to you!! :)

Thanks, Jodi. It's really good to know that I'm no different than others who have gone on to be successful. I'm going for my 3rd fill on Saturday. Hopefully, that will do the trick for a while.

Your weight loss probably stalled because you're not getting enough calories.

I was stalled for over 3 weeks while my body got used to being back on regular food again. then it stalled because i wasn't eating enough. I went and weighed myself last Sunday after I had a large calorie meal on Saturday and I was shocked to see I lost 2 lbs!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
