Size of Band

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is my first post. I just met with the doc today for my first visit. I just really had some questions answered before I make a final decision. Although I am a bit "borderline", it appear my insurance will cover the procedure.

I have a friend who has had much success. In fact, she should probably be the poster child for LBS. I have another friend who had much trouble with slippage.

My friend with great success said not to go with the smaller band as it is prone to slipping. Not sure if the doc will let me have a choice or not. Is there a certain type of band, size of band, and/or manufacturer I should request from my doctor?

Not sure about all doctors, but mine told me what he was going to put in me. I think he uses a particular brand that he likes, or has had success with. I trust his judgement and so far everything is working well. Good luck to you!!!! Becky

I forgot to mention the doctor said he would use a small one in me. Then, without knowing I already met with the doctor, my friend told me to make sure he doesn't use the small one b/c they often slip.

Usually a doctor allows the patient to select the band. You can compare bands on this site by utilizing the search tool at the top of this web page.

Compare Adjustable Gastric Bands - LAP-BAND vs. REALIZE Band

There is a specific thread for the Realize band on this web page too.

Doctor's do not give their patients a choice of band size.

My surgeon uses the LapBand AP. It's nice because the ballooning part of the band goes all the way around the stomach. I think many surgeons have a brand they prefer and stick to that brand, but it never hurts to find out. I know the realize band has a great aftercare program on their website, which is a plus for that band. :tt2:

The only reason I can think that small ones may SEEM to slip more often is because the large one (AP L holds 14 ccs) is fairly new, having only been out a year.

There is an OLD style lap band (called the 9.75/10) that only held 4ccs and it too had more issues that have since been resolved. Perhaps she meant the older ones....or perhaps the numbers she was given were skewed as suggested.

Your surgeon will usually pick what's right for you!

My doc gave me the option between Lapband and Realize. He said for men he doesnt believe Realize is a good option. He showed me the two and the Realize band scared me. Its so much smaller than the Lapband. As for what size he said we would decide once he is in surgery. I ende up getting the largest band. I guess I have a big stoma.

I believe the new bands are all with the bevels and wider so less likely to slip. The old hard thin ones I think are the ones that slipped, since then I think they have worked that out and even with that said some ppl still slip. The small band APS Lap Band is said to have the best weight loss results as they hold less and you reach restriction sooner.Just trust that your doc will chose the one right for you based on the size of your stomach.

Hope this doesn't sound pizzy or "hair splitty" :)

but fast weight loss is best achieved with Roux en Y Bypass. Long term weight loss ... the band catches up.

SO...You may lose a little faster if you're tighter at the start, but if you do your work, keep up the aftercare, follow the doc's advice, down the road regardless of what sized band you have, you'll have lost a good chunk of weight. Reaching restriction sooner MAY mean you start to lose more quickly than those who don't have restriction (or not if you eat slider foods! LOL) but over time, we'll all lose quite well if we do make good choices. The larger bands make life a little easier on people who need them (in that we don't come to in recovery puking and choking and unable to swallow Water because our stomach tops were mashed into bands that were too small) but we do hold more saline, too, and can get just as tight as the 10cc bands. Just takes aftercare, fills, determination, like it does for all bandsters! :)

What I quoted was based on this research.Yes I am sure over a period of time you should catch up if you follow a good plan .The research shows the small band loses more weight the first year ,not even in two years does the big band catch up.

Thanks for the info bamagal. I had swelling and got the small band but they had to unbuckle it because of the swelling. It is sitting in me not doing anything. I go back on 3/12 to have it buckled again. They also said they may switch it out if it is too tight but your info makes me want to keep this one.

I have been trying to loose and keep off some weight so it has more room because I think I will have more weight loss with the small AP band. But then I worry about other possible problems like I am going to Alaska in the summer and wonder if I will swell during the flight. My hands have swollen during flights and my rings get tight.

But this is my body reacting to things. Not everyone is the same. I know that when I lose some weight it will get looser. So a bigger band will not be as effective.

Several folks in my support group told me I wouldn't lose as well as them with bypass, and this was 2 days before my surgery. Well it's 8 1/2 mos later and I am surpassing them. I have the so called 'slower' band the AP-L (14cc's) and as of today I am down 105 lbs in 8 1/2 mos. I don't buy into the stats that were posted too much as my belief it isn't really the size of the band that is giving better results but it's how well the owner of the band is following the rules of the band. There's too many variables to credit one's success or lack there of to just the size of the band. Someone who is committed, follows the bandster rules is going to have the best success regardless if they have a 10cc or a 14cc band. I do like the AP bands though because they are wider and have the cushions all the way around them. But that's not to say someone with the smooth, Realize band who follows the rules won't have the same success.

Just my opinion, of course. I know stats are stats but I didn't want someone to be scared of the 14cc band thinking they couldn't be as successful.

I don't think I am scared of the bigger band and I look at the band as being a tool to loose weight. However, I just think that you may get to your goal faster and can maintain the weight easier with a tighter/smaller band. If that is what your anatomy needs. Only the doctor knows what you look like inside when he/she opens you up.

My doctor has been banding people for about 8 years and he says he uses the smaller one with most people, men and women. He also says that he has only had this swelling issue with one other patient. I tend to trust his opinion that based on my anatomy the smaller one is better but if my body swells then I will have the same problem again. Therefore, when he opens me up again he is going to see how much room I have and may change it out for a bigger band.

I am between 5' 2" and 5' 3" feet tall and weigh 211.6 as of today. I was 230'ish pre op and was about 222 the day of surgery. I am not big boned, nor am I small boned. My doctor says he reserves the larger band for larger people and was very surprised at my amount of swelling. In fact I still feel swollen.

I would love to see the stats on maintenance based on band size. That would probably give a more accurate perspective. Also, the reason for attempting to keep this band in me is that my doctor feels that I will have better results over the long run with this size band.

Your doctor is the one with the experience and if one size versus another is not right for you he/she will tell you. That is one of the things you are paying him/her for.

I am hoping to keep the smaller band because it is the one he though was best for me when he opened me up. However, I am aware that he may change it for the bigger one if the swelling has not gone down. Ultimately I will not know until I wake up after the revision.

You need to talk to your doctor and be willing to work with him/her as to what is right for you. Your doctor has the experience and the stats both personal and from the manufacturer. If you do not have faith in your doctors judgment you should find another doctor.

I am not a doctor and am just sharing my opinions and experiences with those who are interested. I wish everyone well in this journey and I hope us all great success.

i agree with you. i got the realize band. and i have lost 75 pounds in almost 6 months. hoping to lose another 25 in the next 2 months. and if you follow the rules you will lose the weight. i almost didnt get the realize band because of my size. but i was able to get after they looked in. im up to 6cc's and i believe i hit my sweet spot.

i would say trust your dr on which band to get. because if you follow the rulles you will lose the weight.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
