My surgeon in the news! 1st incisionless gastric bypass in the US (not revision)

Recommended Posts

My surgeon (Dr. Oldham) was in the news today. They performed the first incisionless gastric bypass in the US on Monday. Yes, they do incisionless surgeries on people who need a revision, but this is the original surgery that was incisionless.

I wonder if this is the surgery that my doctor and his partner invented. It is in trials in the US. I'm not sure, though. They have been doing this surgery in St. Louis at Washington University for a few months now.

All I know is what the article said. It said it was the first done in the US. I'll definitely keep an eye out to see what else they say. Surely more details will emerge. :sneaky:

Wow! this sounds fantastic. I read about it too, but felt a little bit bad that i bet the surgery will be great but insurance won't cover it. i think it took a really long time till they would even pay for lap bands! they wanted everyone to be stuck with bypass surgery. i hope things move quicker with new operations!

I wish the article told us a little bit more. It's possible that the surgeon was performing the TOGA procedure that is still in trials from my doc or maybe it's a similar procedure that another doctor invented. My doc says he can't be in on the trials since he invented it.

I think the newspaper might have been misinformed about the first one in the country, though. I know for sure that they've done a few already.

Apparently, when they start doing investigational stuff, they have to do it outside the US and then they come here for FDA approval.

I'd just love to see how these people are doing a few months out. My doc says it may be two years until FDA approval. Then, that's when people start fighting with their insurance companies. I'm sure the people that are getting it now (while it is in trials) get it at no cost.

Was this her initial gastric bypass or a revision type surgery, I'm a bit confused.

This was her original surgery done without abdominal incisions. There is a similar procedure where they can do a revision with no incisions, but this woman had it done as an original surgery.

Yes, I wish it had more information as well. I'm going to keep an eye on their website and our newspaper to get the pertinent details. I want to know what this procedure is called and who invented, how long its been in development, etc. I have a feeling we'll hear a lot of information in the coming weeks or months. :sneaky:

It says that you are in Virginia. Are you driving back to Lexington for your surgery?

We see him at the Hazard office. But right now if it would get me in quicker I'd drive to Lexington or anywhere!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
