When to start working out...

Recommended Posts

I went back to the gym at 2 weeks and rode the stationary bike for 30 min. at a time. Before that I walked around the neighborhood.

I'm almost two weeks post op, and I've been on the treadmill. I was wondering the same thing. should I wait a little longer before doing crunches and weight training?

I'll call my surgeon's office tomorrow, but I'm just curious. Haven't had any problems on the treadmill.

I started walking around 2 weeks after. Took it very easy for the next couple of weeks. At six weeks I hit the gym, but still started out slow. Good luck on your journey:thumbup:

I was allowed to use my treadmill straight away as long as i only walked on it, any cardio exercises i had to wait 6 weeks after surgery

How soon after your surgery, were you able to start working out? I'm only 3 days post op, but I'm just curious.
Start a walking routine right away. I started to walking immediately. But I had some complications and the doc accidently punctured my stomach because my liver was so large it was hard for him to put in the band and I had to be opened up from my breast bone to my belly button so the incision was really big and it took much longer for healing. In a week I was walking around the block. In a month I was walking three miles almost every day. About 4 weeks I started doing some light weights. I would ask your doc before any weight training though.

I went for a gentle walk the day after the surgery, and continued to do that daily. By 3 weeks I went back to the gym to use the elliptical for 30 - 40 minutes at a time as well. At 3 months I took up running.

I really wasnt interested in doing any strength training early on, I focussed on cardio. But I think probably 6 weeks, 2 months before you really get into that.

Walk right away.

2 weeks you can do slightly more intense cardio.

No strength training or anything that pulls at your inners, or could cause potential problems (like falling off a bike) until 6 weeks out. As unlikey it is that you will rupture a stitch, that is the concern.

I waited until 3 weeks afterwards to start working out again. I started working out at 2 days a week and I make sure I do at least 3 days a week.

4 days post op for the elliptical. 1 week post op for light weights. 1 week post op for abs. 6 weeks post-op for unlimited work-outs.

Of course my doctor puts people back to work 4 days post-op as a matter of routine, including police at full duty.

I started walking right away and felt great. I really think it helped with the gas pains. Since I really didn-t get any.Did anyone else get glue on their incisions instead of stiches?

I had glue. I've had staples before and I like glue better.

I started walking around the block the day after surgery. Each day I increased that walk a little bit. I'm a week out now and I've been to the gym twice to walk (only) on the treadmill. Today I did 2 miles at 2.6mph and a 3.0 incline. It took me 45 minutes and I was sweating.

I am just taking it easy...I am going to try to walk everyday at least around the block if I can't get to the gym. No stressful workouts for 6 weeks at least!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
