Too tight ? A Cautionary Tale

Recommended Posts

I was struggling with a fill which was far too tight for a while. I was losing weight well, with Oneder land in my reach. I kept telling myself that once I lost enough weight the fill would feel looser and I would be fine.Riding it out was a bad bad idea. After a while I started to have difficulty eating solid Protein and turned to mushies. Which caused a small weight gain (5 lbs) but I quickly re- lost that weight by exercising more.

I really became concerned when I started to have bad reflux and was coughing up acid at night.

At which point I finally came to my senses, realized the damage that I could be doing my stomach and my band and went to the doctor. I needed a complete unfill, but thankfully didn't cause any lasting damage.

So now I am waiting for my stomach to heal and to begin the process of finding the sweet spot. I have regained about 15 lbs and weigh as much as I did back in July 08 (7 months ago) when I got the fill that put me over the top. So from this experience I broke even and I consider myself to be very fortunate that I am able to keep my band. If I had gone for a slight unfill at any of the initial signs of discomfort instead of being stubborn I probably would have continued to lose even if it was more gradual.

I am immensly frustrated with myself and my all or nothing mentality.

Here endeth the lesson

You are giving me food (ha ha) for thought. I am not sure if I want to get another fill. I'm at 6 in a 10 band. I am undecided because sometimes I eat and get stuck right away. I hate that, I just am not sure if I ate to fast or didn't chew enough. Sometimes I can wait it out other times I PB. Not very often though. I can go weeks without PB then I'll have 2 or 3 episodes of it. I makes me scared to fill again. Thank for your story I will keep it i mind as I ponder another fill.

SueAZ,

Thanks for your post.

Getting the fill isn't necessarily the problem. My mistake was not going back after the overfill despite the fact that I was vomiting frequently.

You could always try the fill, and then, if you're getting PBs (or worse--SLIME!) just go right back the next day.

Ivyrose:

I'm so sorry about your situation. I know what you mean about the "all or nothing" mentality. At least your stomach is healing now. You'll be back "in business" in no time.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Lisa, thank you for posting your experience. I am at a similar place with the reflux and stomach burning, PBing, etc. I have an appt soon and hope for just a small unfill. Best wishes.

Mimi

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
