What if...? cheese?

I remember that feeling ... especially a few days before surgery. I certainly binged the weeks before I started my pre-op diet. I think it is normal, you are making a major life change ... not unlike pregnant friends who as they get closer to their due date begin to get scared about how radically their life will change.

All that said, I had surgery just over a year ago and have not really missed anything. I've struggled a bit with finding the right fill level so there have been times that have been tough and I have wanted to eat something but refrained, but for the most part, I am perfectly happy with my food choices. I think the only things I have not eaten in the last year are movie popcorn and gum. My food choices have certainly changed, I am eating a lot less beef, particularly steak, less Pasta, less bread ... well, less everything. But I do not feel like I am suffering and the 100 pounds that are gone are reward enough. Good luck to you.

Geez, if giving up just one food makes you wonder if having lap band is right for you, then I doubt if the surgery is right for you either.

Sorry, but I disagree with this statement. Just because a person is voicing a concern about what food they can have or not have after surgery is not cause to have doubt if someone is ready for surgery or not.

On the contrary, I believe it shows rather great maturity by which the poster is reflecting on legitimate concerns regarding future choices.

I had the same concerns. What will my life be if I have the band? What will I be giving up and what will I receive in return? Will I not be able to eat regular foods ever again???

Do I have to cook seperate meals for my family? Can I never participate in my work's pot luck? Will I always be the odd person out at social gatherings whipping out a Protein shake, while others consume "normal foods"?

After careful research and discussion with my surgeon, I learned that there are no banned foods. I can consume, what I wish. Now, whether my band allows that are not is a story to be told. But currently, I have not had any food stuck issues.

And although I can consume any type of food, it does not mean I do. I am cautious. I am new. I am learning. And thank-goodness my doctor and nutritionist supported me through my food concerns and allowed me to have the surgery.

Look at it this way. Do you love cheese more than you hate being fat?

There's no telling whether you will be able to eat cheese. Probably yes. But you have to go into this with the assumption that ANY food you once loved may be off the menu at some point. I personally have been able to eat anything except tortillas so far. But there was not one food I was unwilling to give up forever if it meant I would be healthy, lighter and more confident. Food is not a major factor in my quality of life now.

I'll just give you one warning, OMG...one small wine, and I'm no good to drive. They warned us about that in our support group meetings, and I've seen other posters mention that as well. I'm sure it has something to do with the small amount of food we're eating. So, either way, your husband makes out. You're either the DD or a cheap drunk. :cursing:

I eat cheese all the time. I eat it on my salad mostly. i eat it in my omellet and I love it. The difference is i dont eat it all the time on everything any more. I also eat the reduced fat chez. good luck with you weight lose.

Thanks for the great advice....I'll take it easy and try my best to eat smart. I told myself when I was trying to make this decision that I would not go forward with it unless I knew that I would not sabatoge myself once I had this tool. Tuesday is the big day!

I think most of us go through a period of mourning the loss of our relationship with food - I think it's why some of us have two week long last meals - but it is so worth it.

hummmm- cheese or my high cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure???... Well the good news is I still eat cheese (string and reduced fat..no bread) and I no longer have high cholesterol, high sugar or high blood pressure. It is a matter of priorities. I hope to live to see grandchildren. I will take life over bread any day. Good luck. Give it time, you wont miss the junk.

I am a chip and dip junky! I love them more than - well &^&%& I made myself a promise. I will eat a bag of chips every week until my surgery - and I will not eat a chip for a whole year. I tried hypnosis last year - and I am going to do that again - Ithink I get a "brain" craving for chips - and that is truely all I can think of ! The hypnosis worked - for about 7 months! and then just like all other "diets" it stopped. I knwo that I have to watch what I eat after the surgery - I know it is not just another diet - but you know - I am not realy sure what is going to happen - how well will I do - will I be able to - - - I really don't know. It's not a diet - it is a life - no - body changing thing - that I have truly no idea how I will do with it. It is new and I know that some people do really well with it and other people don't seem to be able to control themselves and the end up throwing up all the time and ()*& up their band. I wish us all luck! I wish us all the fortitude to pull it off!

Of all the things out there...seriously?? cheese?? I guess we all have our weaknesses, but....cheese??

I'm teasing, but I feel your pain, though. It's a big decision, and it's scary. You know what gives me hope, though, is that so many people can look you straight in the eye and say they'd do it again in a heartbeat. I think I've come to the right conclusion.

I had a grilled cheese sand for Breakfast this morning- ate all of it but some of the crust- it was fine and did not come back up --- I have been banded since 12/9 and if I would have eaten a sand earlier than now I am not sure it would have gone down -- I eat the string cheese as a snack -- cheese is not the problem in a sand - for most people it is the bread -- toast the bread - of course on a grilled cheese

I'm just not going to get to the point of being super tight.

I just read this and just had to post. You dont try to become super tight and that is the right thought process....speedy fast fills is not the way with the band. However I just want everyone to understand that you can be at a perfect fill for months and then stress and other factors can play havoc with your body and then your perfect fill has to be unfilled. Please take it from me I have been at that point and then something stressed me out (really bad) or had a stomach virus (puking and heaving) causing the stoma to swell. So even though our intent is not to get to the point of being super tight sometimes it is out of our control.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
