Banded 12/19. Soooo Sad & Frustrated!

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am new here and I desperately need some advice from you guys. I was banded 12/19/08 and did great! Went for my first fill in radiology on 1/20/09 and ported was flipped. Dr did all he could do but was unable to access the correct side of port. Back to surgery the very next day, 1/21/09, for correction or possible port revision. When surgeon went in, he found that the port had actually came "unlocked". He showed me pictures later. What this means is that when the port is placed the surgeon uses a pliar type device to lock or clamp the port in place. He has no idea how the port became unlocked. It is a stange twisting type method used to lock it in. Could have been a bad band. SO, when it became unlocked, it also became unclamped thereby loosening away from the muscle and flipping. 2nd surgery had a much more difficult recovery. MD was able to do 1st fill during surgery. with 2nd surg, I had alot more pain. I didn't take any pain meds with the 1st and had to take Lortab elixir several times after 2nd. SO, yesterday I go for 1 week follow-up from 2nd surg, and surgeon removes staples. Within 30min after leaving MD office, I notice my shirt is wet with blood and the incision had opened back up. I call MD office and go back. He does not like the Dermabond skin glue and he says it is not quite open enough to replace staples. So he steri-strips it again and puts gauze over the top. After saturating 4 gauze dressings through the evening and night, I think it has finally clotted this morning. I am sooooo frustrated and sooooo angry and sooooo sad. Here I am trying to change my life and better my health and it has been one thing after another! I just want to cry! And guess what the 1st thing you want to turn to when you are stressed! FOOD! So i am turining to you guys instead as a way to express myself. Has anybody had anything similar to happen? HELP!!

I'm so sorry you've gone through all of these difficulties. I know there are others who have had their port flip, and I'm sure they'll respond. I just wanted to send you a warm cyber hug.

My first port was put in the end of July, with in one week it started to leak and the entire thing opened. I went to the hospital and they cleaned it and sent me home with (what I thought) a huge hole that I had to pack with gauze, and was told it would close and be ok. A week later and it stated to leak again and got red outside the area. Went back to the hospital and had to have my port removed. The took the port out and left me with a hole in my body that I could put and egg in and you would not see the egg, it was over 2" wide by 2" deep. I had to pack it twice a day. It took 5 weeks, and scared me to death. I was scared of the wound and scared about the port replacement.

However I had my second port put in in the end of October, I had my second fill Tuesday 2/03 and am doing great.

I was very sad and scared and discouraged but it is all fine now and I am losing. Hang in there it will get better and you will heal. I cried sometimes looking at the hole in my body and though it would never heal but it did and I am moving forward now. Hang in there it will be worth it. :cursing:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
