Protein Drinks...yuck

Recommended Posts

I have started on my liquid protien diet....O.K., the first one was good, the second drink was O.K., the third I though was gross and the fourth one....forget it! I was suppose to drink 2 more, but I simply could not.

I am not really hungry...Oh, yeah, I could eat if I had to...hahahaha, but I literally can't "stomach" those Protein Drinks today. I tried the unflavored unjury in lemonade....nope, yuck...........

Any suggestions? Please help....I have to be on this liquid diet for TWO WEEKS!!!!

It is hard but you have to suck it up and do it. We all have to have that Protein. You will do great. Try to swich the flavors around. I found that Boost shakes tasted the best. Plus you can mix up a Protein Shake with Banana's and Peanut Butter. Let me know if you want some recipe's and I can PM you and send them your way.

Thanks for the reply.....Oh, I know it has to be done, it is just hard to drink something as you are puking....

I was told that I could not add anything to the Protein drink....if I could that might help. I think I will call the dietian...

I bought the Muscle Milk from GNC. It really tastes like a good thick milkshake! The flavor i bought is Cookies and Creme and it is tasty, however i think the chocolate may taste better. The 4pack already mixed is $10.99 or you can buy the large container in the powder but its over $40. each 11oz. carton has 21grams of Protein.

I also got the Isopure drink, it's clear and it tastes like a diet Snapple with a little gritty Protein taste. it's at GNC too and was $3.49 for a 20 oz bottle. it's got 20 grams of protein per bottle.

Margo are you able to add in sugar free flavoring? I'd ask the nurse because it adds negligable calories and can REALLY help the ol' shake go down.

GO here: http://www.davincigourmet.com/page.php?page=742&s=0&&category=2

There's a bunch of flavors and they help make things easier. Just a thought.

Sorry you are struggling!

I use Slim Fast,( the low carb kind) add 3 ice cubes and put it in the blender. I then put it in the prettiest glass I can find, I buy colored straws and put that in the glass too. It looks great and tastes great. I have bought different kinds of protien drinks and they all taste very bad.

It took me awhile, but mine are yummy. I bought a $13.88 Hamilton Beach shake maker from Walmart. I use soy milk, 1/2 banana, some frozen berries and some bran Cereal. I buy plain old fashioned, "Milk and Egg" Protein Powder from Walgreens and add a little. If the berries aren't sweet, a pinch of Nutrasweet does the trick.

Well guess what, I didn't do it, and I'm still living, LOL. No way could I chug, sip, or swallow any of that Protein stuff, not that I don't wish I could have, because I would have preferred lots of Protein. I still got protein, but not as much as ya get in those shakes.

Oh no Lisa, I thought it said vodka after the frozen berries, that kind of shake I can handle, LOL, but not smelling that protein stuff, yuk.

I am still waiting for a call back from the dietain's office...actually I spoke to the hospital dietian but she wanted to touch bases with my surgeron's office. O.K., if that's the case, I could be dead by the time anyone gets back to me!!! Guess, I will keep calling....the SF Jello cup and chicken broth ain't cutting it. I am lightheaded, peeing like a race horse and very cold (and it's 95 degrees out).

I do appreciate all the support I get from this board and everyone on it...you guys are great. Hell, I told my daughter that I was going to post my protien "problem" even before I thought about calling my surgeon's office!

And, Pat, thanks so much ....now I don't feel like such a "freak" for not being able to "stomach" the Protein drinks!

I don't have to do the pre-op liquid diet but will have to be on it after banding. I decided to start trying out some of the shakes so I would know which ones I would do better with so I have them for Breakfast each morning. So far, I like the MuscleMilk the best; I put it in the freezer (when I am home) before I get in the shower. By the time I am ready to go and take it with me it is good and cold. It also keeps me full for a long time.

Has anyone found a prepared shake that is tolerable at room temperature. That is the problme I haven't found an answer to.

Now I am crying...and I am angry....I called my surgeon's office. I got the office manager on the line (only because she answered the phone, I am sure)....anyway, I explained my situation. She said, "well, too bad, you gotta just get though it, besides how are you going to handle things after surgery? You know you need the Protein Drinks to survive that first several months". I was shocked because as a lap-band patient I know we use the Protein drinks, but I had always thought that it was better for us to eat our protein rather than drink it. I asked her if lap-band patients needed to drink as much protein....she said "oh, yeah", but then hesisated as if she either did not know the difference or something. This office is big in RNY, by the way. She told me to just wait for the dietian to call back.....I must say I am envious of you guys who have friendly, helpful and knowledgable office staff to communicate with.

Don't cry Margo, I am pretty sure she doesn't know what the h*ll she is talking about. I know doctors are different but I can't recall any of the bandsters saying they survived on Protein drinks for the first several months.

No, I am pretty sure she doesn't know what she is talking about. I would definitely call her on that. I was on Protein shakes for about 4-5 weeks and once I could get enough Protein in the pureed or mushies stage, bye bye Protein Shakes.

I actually liked the Atkins Advantage chocolate Royale. Not bad, especially ice cold. That is about the only one I could handle...and I drank it rather quickly. Isopure was pure hell! I didn't mind the flavor, but the aftertaste in my mouth made me want to hork! LOL

Good luck and don't worry, you will get through this and you will never look at a liquid diet the same again!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
