Metformin side effects and Lap Band

Recommended Posts

K so I've heard abotu upset stomach on Metformin, and my doctor just prescribed me it. 500mg twice a day. I'm kind of scared just in general because I'm only 19. He said my horomones were fine, but yeah um I'm pre-diabetic. I want to take the medication because it will help but I'm just worried that if it upsets me stomach or makes me throw up, it might hurt the lap band...

I've taken this for years, with no upset stomach at all. The only problem I've had with metformin is that sometimes it can give you diarrhea. When it gets bad, I take Imodium pills. I'm not sure if you can take that with the band, although they are tiny. Anyone know?

I take Imodium when I am having troubles, and I take 1000 mg twice a day!!! (That was my PCOS dosing LONG before I developed diabetes, and I developed diabetes when I was off the Metformin for a few years... so taking it is best for your health long term. I believe that.

I started taking it a few monthss back, I am not pre diabetic but one of the side effects of the med is that it helps pcos, go figure. I am on a really low dose 500mg once a day to seehow my body reacts. So far so good, I feel great. I don't know if its helping though!

actually, I use to get the side effects of Metformin and I finally learned that drinking skim milk or some milk product w/it worked wonders! I know this because I was away on a vacation and was taking the meds w/water and got horrible cramps and diathermy. When I started taking it with milk I never got the side effects

hey girly it seems like we are in the same boat, im 18 and have PCOS aswell. I have been taking metformin for a little while and in the beggining it does make you a little sick, just make sure to take it with food and not on a empty stomach.

I never had side effects from Metformin, but my sister did. She was always feeling sick, so her Dr prescribed her Actos, and that worked well for her.

For several years I took Metformin XR (extended release). I took it at night to avoid nausea. I now take regular metformin and have had no problems!

I've had stomach upset/diarrhea with regular Metformin. My endo switched me to Glumetza with no side effects, then suggested Riomet (which is a liquid) in preparation for banding. I've had no side effects with the Riomet, plus it seems to be controlling my hormone levels much better than the others. Some people just do better with one type/brand over another.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
