I was told the other day that healthy poop floats. They say it tells you that you are getting enough Fiber in your diet. I was told sometime ago that your poop should be the consistency of mashed potato's and I don't think mashed potato's float. Does anyone know what a "healthy" poop should do; FLOAT or SINK and what should the consistency be or does that matter?

Funny.... I was told just the opposite from more than one source. I was told that if it floats you have to many bad carbs (like bread and chips) and to much fat in your diet. If you have lots of fiber from vegetable sources it will sink. there you have it. Aubrie's infinite wisdom. LOL LOL LOL...... this is hilarious.

If I were able to take a crap I would tell you. I have heard the sinking/floating thing before in regards to too much fat in ones diet.

"If I were able to take a crap I would tell you."

LOL LOL LOL.... As one who suffers from Constipation more than I would like, I could really appreciate your sentiment!!!!

You all are REALLY cracking me up today. Between this thread and the one about funny things that happen in the O.R. under anesthesia, my cheeks hurt from laughing!!!

I couldn't help it, I googled.... FUNNY - Vegetarians would have you believe that the "perfect" stool (that is, one uncontaminated by the consumption of animal parts) is the Floater. Many vegetarians have spent their entire lives in the Quest to produce perfection -- when in fact no particular diet can reliably produce Floaters. The vast majority of us bring forth Sinkers.

SINKERS it is.... that my vote!!

Sinkers really need a good P.R. person -- they have gotten a bad rap over the ages. Sure, Floaters are cute and all, but a good solid Sinker will never let you down. :sneaky:

I didn't mean to gross anyone out, but it's all about our health right? That means we should have a healthy diet so we can have a healthy BM and not something that's gonna take days to occur or be hard little balls which indicate Constipation. I'm just trying to find out what the happy medium is? Some of your replies have CRACKED me up. I certainly wouldn't recommend googling this at work though unless of course you're in the medical profession. Give this some thought or talk to a Dr you may know and get back with me. It would be interesting to get a medical perspective on this fecal matter.

I found this article below, but it still doesn't tell me if poop should float or sink and other articles give conflicting answers? I've been eating NO animal products for almost a month and my poop sinks. I've heard that it floats if you consume alot of animal product but I know a personal trainer and a good friend that SWEARS that it should float.

Did you poop today?

It should sink. Fatty stools float as fats tend to want to separate from Water and rise to the top. Stools with adequate fiber are "heavier" and thus sink.

Ahem.

If all your are consuming is liquid, I would think your waste would be liquid. Of course I'm no expert at this Poop thing, I just know it's necessary. I just want to know "what is a healthy poop"?

BTW, how are you feeling 14 days post op? Congrats!

Ever had a colonic? I have a crunchy new-age massage therapist hippy girlfriend who loves them. She pays someone to stick a hose up her backdoor and irrigate her insides. Apparently this is done at a place where other people come to have it done as well. So someone was in there using the facilities prior to your own use of the facilities. This can cost up to $60 or more for one "treatment".

There are those who swear by the health benefits. I just can't imagine....both doing it at all (ie paying someone to let me crap in their office), but also the conversation in which I would tell Joe I want to take $60 (plus tip...I guess you give more if you let loose a good muffin?) to pay someone to make me crap. That would float like...well....you know.

I was told that if it floats your not eating enough Protein but thinking about it I dont know if that makes sense?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
