Be honest, am I being lazy?

Recommended Posts

Prior to my surgery I was going to the gym faithfully about 5-6 times a week average 1-1/2hrs a visit. Since my surgery my time at the gym is pathetic. I seem to have no energy, no get up and go Like I use to. I am not sure if this is laziness that has kicked in or what. I am for lack of better words.. pooped. I know I need to go to the gym. I can squeeze it in my schedule like today I am off. I should be at the gym instead of home in front of the computer. I just seem to have no drive. And believe me, reading peoples post about #'s they are losing and I don't recall what number I started at but know I am not down as much as the average from my surgical date (9/30) I wonder if anyone has felt this. Or (BE HONEST HERE) from what you have read.. am i Just being lazy?

You don't have to go to the gym to exercise. I've done all my post op exercise at home with little equipment. Try some of the exercise videos - I use them for about 15 minutes a day. I also have an exercise bike and an outdoor bike for when the weather gets better.

You can do this! I don't think that you're lazy, just not motivated as much as you'd like. Exercise gives you energy. Start off with a minute a day like I did. Before you know it, you're doing regular exercise in an enjoyable fun way.

The winter cold, yes in California we have winter cold...It makes me not want to get up out of bed and do anything. I am so ready for Spring.

For me the winter cold and no sunshine plays on me wanting to stay home and bundled up.

Can you do some workouts at home? Can you start out slower and build up the workouts?

Even moving your body 10 minutes a day, 3 times a day, adds up. Exercising doesn't mean that you have to devote an hour at a time. Use the stairs, take a walk after lunch, park far away when you go to the grocery store. That way you can work it into your day, as opposed to making it a separate act of 'going to the gym.' I'm the same way, and I've been doing little things here and there, and it's worked as far as inches and weight loss. Plus, it feels so good! Try not to beat yourself up. You are worthy of moving, of being active and alive!

Well it's hard to argue with the "Lean Mean banana Machine" because he has the numbers behind him to make his case.

But....

Not everyone is the same. Maranda, you may not be as easier of a weight loser as he is... You may have to work much harder to see progress.

Personally....

Housework, walking, going up and down stairs, etc. is part of your daily Total Energy Expenditure - your base caloric value - it's not exercise... Now if a person is only capable of walking a few blocks to start then that's ok. You do what you can and work to incrementally increase your fitness level. But most people are going to have to work much harder than a walk here and a bike ride there to achieve success.

I would take a look at your nutrition and Vitamin intake. Are you getting enough calories a day? Are you nutritionally deficient somewhere? Exercise breeds motivation. Once you're able to get back on track you'll feel much better.

Probably bit lazy, yeah. But nothing we're not ALL guilty of.

But commitment to an exercise program means that you go whether you feel like it or not. Over time, the activity builds energy, i cant believe it but I NEED it to feel normal now.

Just Do It is a pretty good motto to live by in the early days.

things have changed since surgery- diet has probably changed

1. evaulate your food intake- make sure extra sugar isn't "weighing down your" motivation

2.have you tried the chewable Vitamins thru walgreens made for bariatric surgery

3.make sure you are getting your protien in and enough water- a fantastic website is the daily plate

4. get your thyroid checked

5. make sure you are getting enough rest

did you have a sleep study done before surgery to make sure you don't have sleep apnea?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
