Pneumonia after surgery??

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all I was just banded on Wed, NYEve. I have been using the spirometer (sp) and met the goal they set for me. Last night I noticed a little crackling in my chest and this morning it was there also. No fever, nausea, chills, nothing like that. just the crackling. But because the hospital put the thought of pneumonia in my head, I am stuck on that thought.

Has anyone ever heard of someone getting pneumonia 5days after surgery?

It might sounds kinda dumb, but I tend to worry about the small things.

Thanks,

Cheryl

The only way to really know what is going on is to see your doctor, so call your doctor.

Personally, I have had pneumonia twice. I was out of work and school for weeks. And was hospitallized once. When you have pneumonia you know you have it without question.

thanks TQ. I had actually just left a message for the Nurse Pract at the Drs office. I am pretty sure it's nothing but just some passing mess but like I said I tend to worry.

thanks for the advice ,

It is better to play it on the safe side by seeking medical consultation.

Good luck!

Yes you can get pneumonia 5 days after surgery...you are doing what you should with the incentive spirometer so it may not be surgery-related, but just...pneumonia! OR bronchitis, or allergies, or a bunch of other things. Good that you called the doc!

Hi:

My friend had pneumonia 7 days after lap band surgery. So, you're doing the right thing if you call your doctor. Feel well, and I hope you end up loving your band like I love mine.

Hey y'all,

Thanks for your replies. Well, the Dr's office called back and suggested an over the counter expectorant/decongestant. With the lack of fever or chills and the fact that the crackling had decreased from this morning to this afternoon, they felt that it was probably more likely due to allergies or the weather.

If it progressed, however, they wanted me to call them ASAP.

Thanks again for all of your support.

Cheryl

I saw your title "pneumonia after surgery" and had to check it out.

I only had pneumonia once in my life....back 10-15 years ago, so it has been long forgotten...UNTIL I was banded. I was banded in summer but as soon as November came I was in the ER 3 times that winter. Pneumonia.

I've already had it once this winter, and am sure it will strike again.

What is up with that! What about losing weight has caused me to be prone to pneumonia?

Just a quick guess, now that you are slimmer, are you more active? Do you go out more? (shopping, the mall, dinner, whatever?) Odds are you are around people more and so are more susceptible! Just a guess, of course. The band itself shouldn't make you more prone.

Only other thing...if you aren't eating right and are now thinner but unhealthy...

Hi,

I just wanted to tell you that i had gastric bypass surgery on Jan 12 2009, was released on Jan 13th. I woke up the next morning with fever and shortness of breath that kept getting worse. Called doc and they told me to go straight to ER. I was admitted back in the hospital with double pneumonia caused by aspiration into my lungs during surgery.

I was just released from hospital yesterday Jan 17th. So it if definitely possible to get pneumonia post surgery. I am still on the mend, but glad not to be in the hospital!

Take care of yourself!

Deb
