hiatal hernia, ulcers, endoscopy, etc

Recommended Posts

Ok, I don't have a band yet but I have had some stomach issues so I decided to see a GI doctor before I got serious about this band business! He did an endoscopy and I have:

1. a hiatal hernia

2. acid reflux

3. duodenal/peptic ulcer

4. a stomach nodule (whatever that is - apparently a sore spot in my stomach that will eventually become an ulcer if I don't take the nasty medicine for a month)

SO - I know ALOT of people had reflux before they got banded, so I'm not too worried about that, but has anyone had these other problems?

What about endoscopy - can you still have this procedure once you are banded?

I have my band consult on 8-4-05 and I will ask the band doc but I just thought I'd ask you guys too!

I had reflux, an ulcer and helicobacter before being banded. I had to take some serious medication and antibiotics for a week or 2 and it only delayed my op 2 weeks. I had major issues with no being able to eat certain foods before the surgery or I would end up really sick and in pain. I put up with that for yrs...I know stoopid me. Anyway since the surgery I havent had the problem and I love it. No more guessing what might make me ill and what wont. Dr thinks it was the ulcer and the hpylori causing it.

Good Luck...its best to get everything all fixed up so it doesnt cause problems with your band later down the track...I know my DR stressed that it was really bad to have an ulcer with the band.

I tested positive for they h pylori bacteria. I'm currently on antibiotics for this taking a total of (19 pills a day). I'm almost finished with the treatment 3 days left. My surgeon requires that I be restested to make sure the bacteria is gone since this bacteria causes ulcers. I have to wait 4-6 weeks for retesting. Then I should be able to send in for insurance approval. At first I was pretty upset that this was causing me yet another delay in getting a surgery date. But have recently decided that I'm thankful that through the testing they found I had the bacteria before I developed and ulcer. I also have mild refulx (who knew...not me) the dr didn't think it would cause me anymore trouble with the lapband that it does now (none).

From what I understand that after banding the gastro doctor should know you are banded and you might have to be unfilled if you have to another endoscopy. But it should still be able to be preformed.

hope this helps,

Melissa

I had a hiatal hernia upon my first banding that was NOT fixed, subsequently, I slipped and had to have the hiatal hernia fixed one year later. There is a definite correlation with hiatal hernias and slippage, I'd encourage you to have this repaired during your band surgery. Of course, your doctor probably already knows this, but I'd discuss it with him.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
