Becoming lactose and gluten intolerant?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery just over six weeks ago and this past week I have noticed that if I drink skim milk straight or have certain kinds of gluten (namely thin Pizza Crust or whole wheat crackers), I get severe severe stomach pains. The milk also causes me instantaneous nausea. I have managed not to vomit from it, but until it passes, its unpleasant to say the least. The gas pains are horrendous and severe from gluten stuff.

I was neither lactose nor terribly gluten intolerant prior to surgery. Anyone else notice this? Can I expect it to be this way from here forward or is it something that could improve with time? The lactose intolerance seems to only be milk, not cheese, pudding, yogurt or cottage cheese.

I became intolerant of whey Protein The drink I was using, made me sick as can be, the runs and nausea all the time. I switched to soy Protein Drink and was fine. I am now 4 months out and no problem with any food except for not eating breads because they get stuck.

It may be temporary with your healing process. Stay away from them and when your more healed gradually try them again in small amounts.

Good luck.

It's so worth it in the long run

My surgeon told me that it's not uncommon for patients to develop a food intolerance after surgery. Sometimes they're permanent and sometimes they go away.

The reason you're not seeing problems with cheese, yogurt, or cottage cheese is that the lactose has been almost completely removed from those foods. The processes used to make these foods are different, but they each end up removing most of the lactose from the milk. For now, try soy milk or a lactose free milk. Of course, you could just skip milk altogether. :)

As for the wheat products, I'd guess it's a wheat intolerance, not a gluten intolerance. Otherwise, you'd be getting sick from almost everything you ate. Try oatmeal and rye bread.

If this persists, try keeping a detailed diary of what you eat and how you feel afterward. Take it to your PCP and ask them for help. They may just tell you to avoid those foods...or they may decide to do further testing. Either way, it's good to keep them in the loop.

Good luck!

Thanks for posting your issue -- I was searching for something somewhere to reassure me that this was "normal" -- I think I have developed intolerance for skim milk -- TERRIBLE gas pains and nausea and running to the bathroom, but not throwing up. It has happened with my Protein Shakes, and McD's ice cream sundae (which I'm sure is fake ice cream). Now I'll be heading to Walmart for some lactose free or soy milk. THANKS AGAIN!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
