Greetings All -

I was banded on 12/30/08. Not feeling any real pain at this time, just pressure. I have not vomited at all, but have had some nausea. I am not quite sure how much I should be eating. I am still drinking out the medicine cups. When should I be able to drink more???

Initial wgt - 334.7lbs

Pre op wght - 321.2 lbs

I had trouble drinking everything I was supposed to until about day 3 or 4, it started to get easier. You should be able to have 3 Protein Drinks and your Water at the very least. Unless you doc said no Protein drinks. How much are you currently drinking?

I don't think you SHOULD be eating anything you have to chew. It's not impossible, but unlikely, because many surgeons put patients on a post op diet of Clear liquids (ranging in duration from 1 day to 6 weeks...it is variable! LOL) but very very few allow people to eat for at least the first week or so.

Confirm that, ok?

As to drinking, I could drink fine from the time they handed me a nice cup of iced Water in the hospital right after recovery. That was DELICIOUS!! I was so thirsty!

It's safe, as long as you don't chug or "swill" it down, to drink at a normal pace as soon as you feel like it. It flows through your stoma fairly smoothly. As you heal and any swelling you have shrinks, you can drink more, and more quickly. So just advance your liquids as you can tolerate.

Hello....

I was also banded on 12/30. Today is my last day on Clear Liquids, then tomorrow I can start having Protein drinks and creamed Soups again....YAY....Never thought I'd be excited about that. Anyway, my recovery has been pretty good for the most part. I've had bouts of nausea, but never vomited.

I've walked a lot and moved around my house a lot. I also took a 40 mile car ride to my moms house, got nauseus on the way over there, but was ok on the way back. Gas pains somewhat but not unbearable. I've been doing pretty good getting clear liquids down. Not bad! I've had up to 32oz a day, sipping pretty much all the time.

I have pain on my port side, but just taking it easy. Cannot bend too well, which is annoying but have husband helping. I think I can actually take in more than I have been, but I'm taking it slow as to not over do it. I'm following my docs orders as closely as possible. Yesterday and today I felt bouts of weakness so I had a teaspoon of creamy Peanut Butter. I know I'm not supposed to but I did it slowly and was ok and it also made me feel much better.

I was banded on 12/29/08. I have felt nausious at times but have not been sick. I am drinking fluids constantly. Unfortunately, I am struggling with the no food, big time. My pain is managable its wanting to eat that is overwhelming. Am I alone in this?:tongue2:

Hi Newbie,

I was also banded on 12/30/08 in Tucson, AZ. I've had some issues with burping, yuk but otherwise been able to drink. I was told to drink three portien shakes a day, plus sugar free Jello and ice pops. I did great the first to days, but today hit a wall, nothing tasted or went down well.

Port site is sore as heck and coughing and deep breaths hurt. No vomiting thank goodness, because after reading everything, I'm more afraid of that then anything else. Still taking my liquid pain meds and started to take some ibuprofen for break through pain.

Good Luck, I know I need it.:tongue2:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
