Hi everyone. I so excited. I just had my surgery on dec the 27 of 2008.

it's has been 6 days since my surgery. i have been off from work for about a week and now that im back to work i have found myself with the same habits that i have been use to here at work. One of them is smoking. I smoke at work and now that im here i have the urge to smoke a cigarette. But im scared and I'm wondering something. I already know that smoking is bad for you but a smoker doesn't care about that. So, bypassing the main reason why smoking is bad, I wonder how it can affect my surgery? If any one has a good explanation please send it over so i can ready it. Or if is not that bad send it over too. Although I will let you know that by the time i get a reply I might have already puff one. I can feel it in my mouth.

I quit nearly 3 yrs ago, & glad i did, but getting back to your situation,

when i smoked after operations, it took me longer to recover, made me cough, & hurt like hell when i was healing, made me feel dizzy/weak & wished i had waited longer for that first draw..

made me run to the bathroom & gave me a tummy ache...

That was my ordeal...did i listen to anyone? ...No..but wished i had..but that was from a smoker too back then...

Now i quit i hope after my lapband op i will recover better & quicker ?....Maybe i will ? maybe i wont ?

I am not a smoker and I have never been. I don't even know why it is a requirement to stop smoking in order to get the lapband. What I do know is that most of us had the lapband done for health reasons; and some to improve their look. Isn't that the same reason why people quit smoking? Why would you do one with out the other?

Smoking constricts the blood vessels and impairs healing. It is also vey bad for your lungs and just a few days out as you are you're still at some risk for pneumonia. May I suggest going on your lunch hour and buying the patch? Now's a good opportunity to quit for good. Smoking can also irritate the esophagus etc...

so stay strong (I know it's hard I smoked over 3 packs a day when I finally quit in 1995) it's worth it. Use the money you spend on cigarettes to start a fund for new clothes!

Thank you for the info. I think I will try to hold on. But the information you are giving I will use to make me resist the temptation. And yes, you are right, I will be needing money to buy me my new smaller clothes. Thank you.

For better or worse, my surgeon doesn't require patients to quit - although it's obviously not advised. I've smoked everday for 7 years and I'm terrified to try and quit. We all know how bad it is - but I love it - well I love it and hate it. Part of getting the band is to be "free" from food - and I need to be free from smoking also. I know I NEED to stop - but I'm scared. Any helpful hints?

i can tell you one thing .... quitting isn't easy (for most of us) but it's only really hard for a little while. Each and every day it gets better until the day dawns when you don't want to smoke and haven't even thought about it.

That doesn't really ever happen with food...so like you I was afraid to quit because I thought it would be lifelong misery (like most diets are). It wasn't. There were tough times, for me anyway, but I just thought "I've already gone X days (or weeks or months) without a cigarette. I don't want to start over and I want to quit, so hang in there". Use the patch, use the commit lozenge, use chantix, whatever you think you need, and do it. You will feel good (and smell good!) and you can use the money on new clothes!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
