This post is such a revelation for me! I have not been too secretive about my surgery, banded on Nov. 20th. I don't live near any of my family but when they saw me at Christmas, down 25 pounds they were all very encouraging and supportive. However, my closest friends whom I work with day in and day out couldn't be less interested. I don't talk about my surgery or weight loss unless they bring it up. Both of my good friends started weight watchers while I was preparing to do my surgery, neither of them more than about 20lbs over weight. And they have both done great losing weight and meet their goals. They constantly praise one another, share recipes and talk about what they are doing that works. But if I chime in it's like the conversation completely dies. I feel like they are looking at me like I am cheating. And every time we eat, we usually have at least one meal together a day. They will comment like, oh don't something stuck, or aren't you full yet? It's hard but I feel like they are jealous!! They are neither one over weight at all. Can't people be happy we are at least doing something about our weight and health!! Keep up the good work everyone!! One day closer to the new me!!

So Christmas day I was excited could not wait for everyone to see me. Mom, Dad, my sisters the whole family. When everyone arrived NOT ONE person looked at me and said "wow, you look good" you loook great" NOTHING. NOTHING WAS MENTIONED.

Maranda:blush:

WLS makes the people around us VERY uncomfortable - for different reasons - which have already been addressed by other posters. Validation feels great - but it's not the measure of your success. Only YOU know if/when/how you're succeeding. What I've experienced is that people who don't know I'm banded go out of there way to offer praise. But many of those who know I've been banded (mostly family) won't say a peep. Some think WLS is stupid and dangerous - some think it's cheating - some are jealous - some just don't know if you want to talk about it, especially in front of others. Be proud of the compliments you get, but cherish the ones that are given from yourself.

I feel like the lap band it helping me cheat, and that I am not really loosing it on my own. I know this is crazy, but I can't help feeling this way.

If you've only been banded a very short time - it can feel this way. But as you progress, the "easy" weight loss will be gone and you will have to work your a$$ off to keep the scale going in the right direction. Trust me - you'll lose that attitude.

They may be jealous or perhaps just uneducated about the band. They have more in common with their weight loss plan than you do. If one of them were banded it would be a whole different conversation. But I know a lot people, especially those on traditional weight loss plans, look at WLS as cheating. If they only knew....

Thank you Brad for the insight. I don't know if it makes them uneasy or what is the case. I also know it is so much easier said than done about finding validation within myself. That just seems to me being self centered and concited. But then again hoping for validation and compliments is also self-centered and concieted. I just want my famly to be proud of me. Yes I did this to get healthy and for me only. I guess I have issues I should look into more. Like 1. Why do I feel I need the validation?... hmm things to ponder.

Maranda, I just wanted to give you a hug. Validation from family members can feel SO important, especially if you have been the "big person" in the family for a long time. I wonder sometimes if we subconsciously think we will be more lovable after some of the weight comes off, or less invisible somehow, and so we are looking hard for the signs of that happening...and when it doesn't, it just crushes us.

It is not conceited to value your own opinion. It is healthy and an important part of this journey I think. We are rebuilding our self esteem as we rebuild healthier bodies. We are learning that we do deserve good things in life and as that happens, those who are used to us being a certain way in both behavior and physical form are probably going to be forced to re-evaluate something about themselves and our place in their lives. People often identify themselves by those around them...and when those around them change, nothing quite feels the same.

You are doing fantastic. Don't worry. Continue on the path you are on, and they will have no choice but to notice. Whether or not they comment really isn't the issue. There is no way to gain or lose 25-30+ pounds and more without it being noticable.

I have a lot of guy friends and once we were all out in a group and a female friend of mine was there. She had not been around in over a year and had lost a lot of weight. When she went to the restroom, all the guys asked me, as soon as she was out of earshot, if it was OKAY to mention how good she looked, etc. I think some people really do not know how to handle it. I did not even tell my family I was getting banded- they are all thin and very hard on me about my weight. I can't wait to see how they react in 6 months! I can tell you- I would be just as upset as you if they ignore my loss!!!

I think you've all done wonderfully well... from 10 lbs all the way up to 100 lbs each pound takes a lot of sweat and focus to take off. My thoughts are that people are mostly self-obsessed. Those of us who are bigger are interested in whether someone is gaining or losing weight... but at least my skinny friends/family or my 'fat but don't care' friends/family are so into what's going on in their lives and their heads that they often either don't notice, or can't be bothered to comment on someone else's weight loss. Also, they tend to have a picture in their head of what you look like - and unless it's DRAMATICALLY different... you just look the same to them.

For what it's worth, pat yourself on the back for the effort you've put in and the success that you're achieving. I tell myself that i'm a good girl every time I get off the treadmill - although I stopped being a girl a long time ago - it just makes me feel better.... a bit proud of myself.

good luck and keep on moving.

You GO Maranda!! You are not being shallow at all. Some people we will never be able to figure out. It's funny but I have found that some of the same people that will not recognize or acknowledge your weight loss were the same ones that didn't have a problem telling you that you REALLY should do something about your weight when we were FAT.

Ditto for me!

My co-workers have noticed the weight loss and have stated so (they do not know I have the band). However, I spent Christmas with my entire famliy and no one said anything, which I was cool with. My family does not know I had the surgery (only my sister), so I did not want to get into a weight loss discussion.

I have lost 30 pounds thus far and cannot wait to see what my loss will be next Christmas.

I feel your pain. I have had it both ways, when I went to my families xmas party everyone told me how great i looked and made me feel almost weird from all the attenion i was getting. but at my wifes family xmas party only one person steped up and asked me about how i did it and told me i was looking good. Now maybe because i live near my wifes family and they see me more maybe the weight change isnt that big of a thing because they see me a lot but I my family only see's me once a month, so the change is bigger for them because the see 15 to 20 lbs down at a time. I try not get too upset about it because even I dont see a big change in me sometimes.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
