Oprah's an idiot

Recommended Posts

I disagree. I don't think that Oprah is ignorant. In fact she makes a point of being well informed. I don't agree with her opinion concerning weight loss surgery and I suspect that I would have little interest in many of the topics that she deals with. This is because I am not raising a family, I don't cook, and I don't have spiritual or financial problems - and these seem to be the issues that she deals with on her show. Apart from the fact that we both like to read, Oprah and I have little in common, I would guess. But she is certainly not an ignorant woman.

Sooooo, IOW, you disagree with a majority of what Oprah spews?

I'd be hard pressed to top her latest blunder. She told Kate Winslet "I so glad you have real breasts" WTF kind of thing is that to say to anyone, & how come she took such note of it?;) Even Ellen topped her favorite Christmas gifts this year. Oprah went with cheap & free (why? she is rich as hell) & Ellen gave away some awesome crap.

Now, that is very, very deeply weird!

I don't find it weird at all that Oprah commented on the real-ness of Kate's boobs. Oprah sees Hollywoodland up close and personal everyday. It's tiring to see all the phoniness that is cranked out of Hollywood and onto the big screen and thrown into our faces everyday. If it weren't for that, implants would never be the topic of conversation like they are nearly everywhere these days.

Dallas is chock-a-block full of artificially enhanced breasts. It is relatively rare to see a young woman without them if she is pretty, slim and either has her own wealth or has some guy or parent supplying the cash for the surgery.

It's everyone's right to dislike or like Oprah and to voice opinions. She puts herself out there everyday and in a very open format.

That being said, I agree with Green and I do think that she is very good at what she does. Let's face it, she's one of the most powerful women in the United States - in face she's darned influencial all over the world.

I believe that she has evolved from being a small town girl into a highly glamorized powerhouse media producer. And she's now like many of you have said, really, really full of herself. I occasionally try to watch her, but I find most of her shows really boring and a waste of time.

But I've really enjoyed some of her shows on health and nutrition. I don't criticize her for choosing not to have WLS when in fact, there's probably been a lot of pressure on her to have surgery. I also don't expect her to criticize me for having it either.

As for the two books where she was fooled by the authors, you're giving her way too much credit. She has a powerful and effective staff lining up her shows (and her books) but I doubt very seriously if they have the ability to verify facts stated in random books. It is encumbent on the publishers to do that. Just like newspapers must verify that their reporters stories are true. She was sucked in, just like the publishers and many, many readers. It wasn't cool, but it also isn't all that surprising.

As for the Texans who sued her because she dissed beef, remember folks, she won.

I don't criticize her for not having surgery either. I do criticize her for presenting such a biased view of it and for subtly criticizing those who have had it.

Lol, interesting. DH and I were given a whole set of Midsomer Murders on DVD, which is a British detective series, we're a bit hooked on those and have about 200 Taggart DVD's, so we're onto something new.

We've always giggled at the people on the shows. Made jokes about how unattractive the English are.

Why? Because we're so exposed to the Hollywood view of beauty, that to see completely normal looking people on TV, people without blinding white teeth, enormous plastic tits, bits of fat sucked from every slightly curvy part of their body, huge hair and incredible makeup, looks really WEIRD. Yet people still look pretty much normal in Australia and older women with obvious face lifts and work done are really seen as a bit tragic, definitely stereotyped as bored, rich and unfulfilled. You dont see fake boobs all over the place and IRL I dont know anyone who's had a face lift. Yet its so pervasive isnt it? That for a star to have real breasts is quite comment-worthy.

Has anyone seen that cartoon about what Hollywood would do to the Mona Lisa? Its freaking hilarious because its so tragically true.

I dont think it was weird for her to comment either. In my view Kate Winslet is SO much more gorgeous than so many other fake looking starlets and her naturalness is quite refreshing.

I think it's weird because it's too personal.

Yeah, let me rephrase perhaps. Its not weird to notice and appreciate Kate's natural squishiness, lol. Its rather weird to go on about it on national television.

I found the comment about Kate Winslet's breasts in "bad taste" really. It just isn't something that should be blurted out on a TV show. I think it's a case of "maybe you had to see the show" to see how it was presented. Kate Winslet is a wonderful actress, did a great job in Revolutionary Road (although the movie is a whole nuther subject), but that was over the top even for Oprah. Kate replied with gesture-"oh you mean down to here" or "under my arms when I lay down". Give me a break, that was such an unnecessary comment, & it in no way mean I approve or disapprove of breast surgery, because I don't give a fiddler's damn about it. It's a personal decision. It just seemed inappropriate in the way it was said-but Oprah, well I guess she can get away with anything-sadly.

What's the metric conversion to a "fiddler's damn"?

My .02 cents, for what it is worth. Oprah is a tw@twaffle. I a so annoyed with her giving away cars (for publicity) and opening schools (again, for publicity), and I personally think she fluctuates her weight on purpose so she can have some sort of human interest publicity 'relate to the little people' story. I mean, with the weight issues this country (and others) faces, who does not want to see someone like Oprah 'fall from grace'? She is a PITA.

I don't think she intentionally gains weight, I think she battles the same demons as the rest of us. She just won't acknowledge why she has these issues so she can finally resolve them.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
