Banded Friday, July 221

Recommended Posts

Nothing remarkable about the surgery...it went like clockwork, and I was on my way home by 11:30 or so. :knockedou I agree with others that the gas pain is by far the most uncomfortable...I mean, painful! So, it's Sunday, and I can sit up and type a little, but still very sore, and tired. I'm not too big of a weenie most of the time, so I'm soldiering on. I have had 1/8 c. applesauce, and 1/2 container yogurt. Between, Liquid Protein drink, about 2 oz at a time, and Water. Pain meds, of course. And Gaviscon. The most I have been able to sleep at a time is about 3 hours. All of this sounds about normal, right?

I keep telling myself that every day will be better, and kinda go with the flow.

Just wanted to update you on the surgery and recovery so far, and say thanks for the encouragement and wisdom! Cindy

So, as you can see, the pain meds are working at least on my ability to type! I can just picture all the rolled eyes on the July 221 date! Cindy

Congrats! It sounds like you did just fine. I am encouraged by your words as mine is Wed., 7-27- and hope mine goes like clockwork also. Are you scheduled to go back to work anyime soon? I think you said you were a school teacher and just wondered when you go back. I have a desk job and will go back on Monday. Be off 5 days.

Is the Gaviscon for heartburn or what?

R U Taking SMALL sips?

Keep up the good work and hope to read an update soon.

Bonnie

Congratulations!!! Based on my experience, today will be the hardest day as far as being uncomfortable from the gas. After my second day, every day was easier. Don't forget to walk, walk, walk--that seems to help get rid of the gas and bloatiness faster!!! Good luck to you!!

Thanks everybody! I go back to work Aug. 9, so I am sure I'll be up to it by then...I take small sips of everything, believe me! I don't think I have any choice! I guess it's swelling, according to what I've read. This post-op is no picnic, but it's not the worst, either...for those of you preparing for next week. Everything will go well, and then you'll get through the first week by being nice to yourself! Thanks again for the encouragement. I get up every six hours or so and read the boards, then I feel better, and go back to my lair! Very soft hugs to you all, Cindy

Congrats and you do sound like you are doing good! Hmmmm...I see people posting so many days post op...(dumb question) do you count the day of surgery also? smile.gif

I have been doing good also until I had too many crushed pills in too much applesauce and ate too fast this morning. Yep....I know the feeling now.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Susan, I don't know the right way to count it, but I counted Sat. as 1 day post-op, and today as 2 days post-op...at least I think that is how I counted it! I figured the surgery day was just that, and days after that were "post."

Day 3 post-op: Much easier to move around, slept better last night. I even picked up some stuff around the house, not heavy stuff, though. I feel a lot better, port area sore, but normal-sore, I think! Everything I read here from others' experiences has helped so much!!!! Thanks for asking about me, and I'll try to answer any questions I can, being a newbie...be sure to get Gas-X or Gaviscon or something before you have your surgery! The newly banded Cindy

Cindy,

So glad you did so well with the surgery. The worst is over. By day 5 you will be amazed at how you feel. I felt good -- just sore in the port area. Other than that I felt great. I beleive it was because of all the Vitamins in the shakes and not putting all that food in my mouth.

Hello all,

This is my first post. This website has been better than the Dr. My surgery was July 22nd also. I have had it pretty rough the last 2 days. The following has been my experience.

I had 7 days of fasting prior to the day of surgery and nothing after midnight

surgery Friday at 1:30

In surgery 2 hours..they found a hiatel hyrnea they repaired

Sent home with instructions to eat "light foods(Jello, Soups etc for 24 hrs" and then full liquids for 2 weeks.

On my way home I got a smoothie/orange and banana (small)

Drank a litte of it normal drinks too....no problem

slept for 2 hrs

Drank the rest

took some pain med and mylanta for gas

Later had cup of creamy Tomato Soup....no problem.

Slept fine that night

Saturday Oh my God...the gas pain...sipped on creamy chicken Soup.

Tummy was HURTING! GAS????

That afternoon drank dieter's tea and took 2 phayzime

Got worse and I learned what the PB was. Like throwing up/dry heeves

That happened twice that day,

sipped on adkins drink but it did not feel right nausea went away around 9pm Sat.

4 am got up and did a teaspoon of pain med and 3 of mylanta

had another pb shortly after that....Oh GOD what have I done!

Not as sick to my stomach on Sunday after keeping on schedule with anti nausea suppository. But still did not feel right when I put anything and I mean anything in my stomach. Manage to get a Protein drink down that had 40 grams of protien from 8 til noon.

Dr office called this morning and I explained what was going on and they said I should just be doing Clear Liquids for 7 days after surgery. They also suggested not taking the "creamy" mylanta and use GasX. These instructions were NEVER given to me! Not on website and not in paperwork.

So maybe this would not have been so bad if I had just sipped on warm broth, Water and skim milk these last few days.

This website has been much more helpful than the Dr office. So I am posting my experience for others to learn from.

Some of us may not be able to handle full liquids after surgery....I don't know where I went wrong...full liquids??..dieters tea and 2 Phazyme??? It seems from what I read others are able to have full liquids and even mushies.

I really appreciate the openess and advice that I get off of this website.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
