Eventful First Fill....Dear Lord, Let Me Survive! =o)

Recommended Posts

I went in for my first fill yesterday. The first amount added was definately too tight so my doc (who has been awesome though all of this) removed some until I was comfortable.

I left and headed home. About half way home, I started to burp up all the Water I had drank. Since my doc's office was closed by that time, I continued home.

Throughout the evening, I continued to burp up everything including my own saliva. I finally called my doctor's answering service and got the doctor on call. He called the ER and I headed off to the hospital (45 minutes away and this was 10:00 at night by this point).

I got to the hospital and found that the on call doctor had does not do the band and did not know actually what he was doing since it was not his procedure. The ER doc was equally unknowledgable about what to do. They did try to stick me a number of time with a SHORT non-coring needle but were unsuccessful.

FINALLY, at 1:00 in the morning, they called my doc at home. He came in (the poor guy had a long drive, like me, and also set the alarm system off in his office building trying to get the proper needle) and easily removed another cc from my band. I could easily get water down at that point.

Upon reaching home, I could not get water down again but, with all that was going on, did not worry too much at that point. Figured it was just swelling from the problems of the day.

Upon waking earlier this morning, I could still not keep fluids down but still had not panicked due to some swelling and the warning of a tight band in the mornings. I did burp up what looked to be brown blood, pink blood, and saliva.

I went back to sleep and woke about 30 minutes ago (early afternoon - I was up most of the night) and am sipping some warm chicken broth. So far, so good. I still feel like I have a bit of a "lump" in my throat but am still attributing that to some swelling.

I have some mild burping but am not burping up the Fluid like I was last night and this morning. Am praying this continues to be the case. I am sipping very slow but it seems to be working. I don't have that "Oh no, here it comes!" feeling so far.

I am about 6 pounds lighter than I was at this time yesterday. I figure this is due to fluid loss and am not counting it on my ticker.

I feel like I have been hit by a very large, very fast truck.

Has anyone else been down this road and do you have any tips to offer? Anything would be welcome.

I would definitely be concerned about what looked like brown blood and pink blood. I think you should call your surgeon and tell him that. And tell him that you may be dehydrated. Six pounds in 24 hours is not normal. You are probably not able to get enough fluids now.

Pre-band here, but I've been researching all this since summer and this is not normal to be burping any color of blood...call you surgeon!

Ok, two days later and no blood now.

I kept down about 3/4 of a small can of chicken broth yesterday. Then nothing else.

This morning, so far, I have kept down little over a cup of Water, a TBSP of vanilla pudding, and about 2 TBSP of very thin mashed potatoes and gravy. I think I may be on the mend.

Guessing I had some massive swelling? Or is this normal after a fill?

Thanks. It is good to know that I am finally getting into the normal range.

I am still peeing brown (have been all day) but am getting more and more fluids in as the day goes on. I have even had some runny mashed potatoes with gravy.

Feels good to get on track.

If you are peeing brown and you had some prior bleeding you really need to contact your surgeon. Neither is normal. If your are hydrated enough your pee should be pale yellow or clear. Don't assume you are better until you talk to your doctor.

My thoughts exactly! Please call your doctor and let them know this! There should not be any noticable bleeding/blood anywhere in your GI tract from this procedure...even with "massive swelling".

Oh, I've been in touch with my surgeon and I am keeping in touch with him through this.

As much as I love forums and the valuable information that can be taken from here, nothing can replace my surgeon.

The bleeding is gone now and my doc feels it was from the massive amount of burping everything up. He feels it was up higher in my throat.

The brown pee is obviously dehydration and I am still peeing it. Figuring that will resolve in the next day or so. I have been able to get a lot of liquids in today and am definately on the mend.

Thank you so much for looking out for me though. That is why I love this site.

Wow... quite an ordeal. I think I'd schedule the next fill for the first appointment of the day so you have a bit of time to see how it feels/adjusts!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
