HELP! I'm starving already...It's in my head, right?

Recommended Posts

I am on day 2 of my pre-op diet. I feel like I am starving, but reading the posts from all of you have made me know that I can make it. I get my band Dec 19th, and my family is totally supportive. My husband and daughters are being amazingly sweet and coming up with great things (liquid) to eat. I was told I could have anything I could suck through a straw, and my daughters were the ones to say get some Tomato Soup, or strain the veggies out of the Soup and eat the broth. I was concerned about the liquid diet for 2 weeks prior but I know it is all going to be worth it!

Honestly, yes it does suck being hungry. But I WILL tell you this - I got banded on Monday and did the pre-op diet obviously before that. The first three days were the worst - I was SO hungry, craving everything, I was miserable. After that when I was huungry I actually looked forward to a salad or a small peice of food to satiate me. Once the two weeks were ending, I was eating chicken and veggies like they were the most delicious things in the world, and just a little bit would satisfy me. So for me, I got over the hunger and cravings about the first week. Yes - it's going to suck for awhile. But it's not impossible.

Does anyone know why different Dr.'s have different pre-op diets? I saw mentioned that some people can only have liquids, some whatever they can get through a straw and other like me have 3 shakes a day + a small meal. I'm just curious.

Wish I could choose the one that works for me! lol

I also wanted to say that today is the 3rd day that I've been trying to stick to the "my way modified" pre-op. As you know I was starving on Monday and failed miserably. -sigh- Tuesday wasn't as bad for some reason b/c I let myself have what I wanted without obsessing and found I made great choices. Yesterday the same and today so far I have been fine.

I am eating more than when I'll officially be on the pre-op starting on the 20th but I am SO GLAD I tried this out now and am cutting back. If I had waited I would have been in hell. Knowing I didn't have to stick to it on Monday is what helped me through it. I think we're all different and I am glad I found this out about myself now.

Maybe I instinctively knew it and that's what I started..who knows.

You know the coffee thing is bothering me more than other things...I bought Decaf last night but I wonder if that will be ok. I'll have to email the dietician...again...I'm sure she loves me!

So how are you feeling after being banded on Monday? How did it all go?

Are you hungry now? Can I ask a silly question too? Can you feel the band or the port? I keep thinking that I'll feel it in me.

Hi there! I'm on my 2nd week of pre-op diet, on the liquids only. I'm on day 3 of it. My surgery date is the 17th. It's been hard, but I have found that I have to drink the shakes BEFORE I get hungry or I get nutty. This week has really made me aware of my food addiction. Honestly, my stomach isn't growling, and I almost have the same feelings of anxiety that I had when I quit smoking 12 years ago. It's crazy! I really can't wait until Dec 22 and I can have something mushy!!! Funny how your preceptions change, chicken salad in the magic bullet is sounding soooo good!

By the way, I also ate my house in "mourning" for the food I would be missing.

Good luck to you!

PS. Hubby is on frozen dinners this week.. I ain't cooking! Kids are grown and gone, so I don't have to worry about that

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
