What is this pain?

Recommended Posts

You tell me...

Twice now in the past week I have a strange pain. It starts in my back below the right shoulder blade. It's dull and slow. It moves across my back and then to where I assume the band is.

Last time it lasted about an hour. No position gave me relief. The remaining pain meds gave no relief. Is this what being stuck feels like? Is it gas? It was so bad I was headed to the ER the other night, but it quit right before walking into the ER.

Have you recently had a fill? What were you doing at the onset of pain? How long after you'd eaten something was the onset of pain?

I had a fill on 11-16 and this was Thanksgiving night. I'm afraid I'd overeaten, but not sure. The pain was 4 or 5 hours later. I was doing nothing when it started I was laying watching a movie. When the movie was over, I sat up and the pain started. It almost felt like it was in the muscle, but when it moved to the stomach, I'm sure it wasn't.

If it was an eating issue I would think it would have hit you much sooner. Five hours later would lead me to rule that out. It's worth a call to your surgeon. Your certain to not be the first to experience this. Maybe someone else will respond who's experienced this or knows someone who has. At any rate, good luck and keep us posted.

 Right shoulder blade pain is classic Gall Bladder symptom; it's like a gas pain, can be severe, comes and goes, make you break a sweat and feel like death would be a blessing...if you still have your gall bladder....you should definitely get it checked out *ultrasound.

I would call your bariatric doctor just to be on the safe side. I would not self-diagnosis.

I know how I feel when things get "stuck". It does fill like it's in my back, but yea, 5 hours later? It might be that you laid down too soon after eating, but def. call you dr.

Let us know!

I agree, call your surgeon, it sounds like it could be your gall bladder, but I'm not a doc and if I were, couldn't diagnose you over the internet anyway! Your safest course is to ask your surgeon. If the pain was severe to the point that you went to the ER with it, don't ignore it. Call tomorrow.

I have found that my back hurts when there is undigested food above the band (I think) It's just sitting there, not moving, I have vomitted hours later and felt better. I don't know what it is but the pain is dull and in the center, by my spine. A couple of nights I have had to get up, walk, drink Water to overfill in order to vomit what has packed down and I have felt instantly better! I don't know if this is a solution but this has helped me tremendously.

I have this pain off and on since my first fill. I also had it after surgery and it took weeks to go away. I spoke with my surgeon and he said it sounds muscular. He didn't seem concerned and acted like it was not from the band. I have never had this before lapband. I have it some times before I go to bed and haven't had anything to eat for hours. I sleep with a heating pad against my back to ease the ache.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
