Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

I am thinking about the Health Ways classes.

Thanks for the great advice Aud on Protein. I thought I was getting enough but I underestimated. I made sure I got every last Protein in today and that helps. Won't weight until after the Holidays.

Which surgeon are you getting?

They have someone out of office..

I dont know about the appts i just know i go back on fri.

I heard they have 80 referrals a week! wow.

The bypass and lap band patients go thru the same process.. I am getting Dr Baggs.

I have a feeling after the new year it will be more rough! Because, they are opening it up so people dont have to get a PCP referal.. so you can imagine.. So, hopefully they call asap.

I am going to bed now:D

Good luck!!!! Hope you get a call asap! They are in the office Fri.

Hello all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I was about to go onto the KP web for information and stumbled upon this thread. It is good to see that I'm not alone. I have my orientation at Richmond on 1/13. I'm pretty excited about that. This entire process is nerve racking. I look forward to learning and from you all and also supporting eacj other through this process.

Hey Reggie, welcome!

Hey to all, hope your holidays were happy and not too brutal with temptations! I had a hard time, was traveling, staying in motels and eating mostly in restaurants . . . . .I took my ice chest everywhere, with lean ham and turkey, reduced fat string cheeses etc., but still . . . my goal was not gain no more than 2 lbs back, and when I weighed in this morning I was only up 1, hooray for me!!!! I want to be below my 10% when I meet Dr. Baggs on January 23rd, that's almost 10 lbs, do you think I can do it??

Has everyone seen the new Richmond binder? ? I had orientation Nov. 4th, it must have been just before this one came out. The Lapband sections are in here and available online, hooray!

http://www.permanente.net/homepage/kaiser/pdf/39806.pdf

Finally making some progress on the caffeine thing, I took Doc Zimmerman's advice and got some really good half-caf ground up, I don't miss the caffeine and still have all the taste. This is a big step for me, I was doing a quad-shot plus 2 or 3 more cups every day. Going to go get a nice fresh cup of half-caf now. Cheers! Happy Saturday!

You can do 10lbs by the 23rd! Reduce the calories, add some cardio and you'll be there in no time. I'm trying to do it lol! But i have 15 to go...I've set the 31st of Jan to do it, so I'm going to try my darndest. I'm not around much though (on here) because i've decided to have the gastric after meeting with my surgeon.

... did 4 hours of wii fit in 48 hours lol... but also had a ton of summer sausage and a bag full of fred's bread... eek

What was your decision based on. I have been thinking that RNY would be best for me because of personal reasons.

What was your decision based on. I have been thinking that RNY would be best for me because of personal reasons.

When I met with the surgeon she asked me why I wanted the lap band more than the gastric was because I didn't want to be in a ton of pain, or be in the hospital for too long.

She told me that the gastric scars are the same, if not smaller because there is no port, the pain is almost equivilant, that I am healthy enough for either surgery without having to worry about complications (I have no other problems but my weight). She said with the gastric I will lose weight faster, have better long term success and the best part is... well to me.. is that I wont be able to tolerate sweets or carbs as I would the lapband. That's a biggy for me, I am a sweet/carb person and if I think I can eat only a little, then id eat more, stretch my pouch and it'd be all over.

So ultimately the gastric is best, I'll lose faster, stay smaller longer, no mush stage too AND no foreign object.

OH and less follow up, she said there aren't as many appointments unless I have problems.

She said with both you'll need to take Vitamins for the rest of your life anyway, so why not do the one that has the best results :tongue_smilie:

I totally agree. We all do it because of what we decide is best for ourselves. I have researched for a while now and my cousin had RNY in July and she is doing well. I think the band would be too much for me to handle, I really don't want to have to deal with the port and fills in my life, I also decided that I did not want the band which is a foreign object around my stomach for the rest of my life. This is really a big decision altogether for me. But if I were to have it, it will be the gastric. I am also a sweet and carb lover and can't seem to control cravings. I need restrictions.

Im on thinnertimesforums for gastric bypass (they have lap band support too). My mom had RNY 4 years ago. She has kept off 100lbs, still has like 40 to go, but she has bad habits and has been in and out of the hospital. She smokes and drinks... bad bad bad.. so at least I know what not to do!

Those are all good reasons for RNY, especially the sweets thing. I've chosen the band but I'm a volume eater. not into sweets at all. I also like the slower weight loss, more time to develop new eating/lifestyle habits, no hospital stay, lower complication rate and (bottom line) I am just not comfortable with the bypass idea. For me. There are only a couple of people in my support group getting the band, everyone else is RNY and for each one it is different. There is a reason that the Kaiser surgeons call RNY the "gold standard" but it is just not for me!

Nicole, I got Dr. Baggs because I asked for him - Dr. Zimmerman said he was a good "match" for my goals, etc. and was passionate about his work. :tongue_smilie: I like that!

Hi Riley, thanks for the welcome. Christmas was very relaxing for me. The kids opened their gifts and we went to The Shrinners Children Hospital to bless the kids there with some gifts. food wise I was a total mess, I suppose I'm trying to get in all I can before my orientation. I did put a break on the feasting, after that's the reason why I'm heading towards this route.

I'm looking forward to this process. My husband bought into this and that makes it a thousand times more exciting.

You did well eating on your trip it appears, 1lb is nothing, you will get the 10lbs of before the 23rd I'm confident :).

I am also in the process of trying to decide which way to go. One day I am fine with the lap band and than the next I am sure the RNY is better for me.

I worry about the fills and continual appointments since i may be moving out of state this summer and having to change jobs, insurance and it could get complicated. I also like the longer term restrictions............

I am still researching both and see lots of pros and cons. It is such a complicated long term process that I want to be sure I get what is right for me.

I tend to not have a huge amount of willpower and sweets are my downfall but other than that I eat healthy.................

I am waiting to see which way the surgeon leads. I am guessing I have until the day of surgery to make a final decision.

I am still waiting to hear from Kaiser. Will call tomorrow.

Oh by the way the nutrition lady at my orientation also talked fast and seems rushed and irritated as well. She was the only one I felt was not excited to be there.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
