Twist below Stomach Pouch

Recommended Posts

Yeah, most of the time "my band slipped" is inaccurate. It would more properly be said that "my stomach slipped". And it's shameful how many people are practically abandoned by their doctors after being banded. That's why I was determined to find a surgeon with a team approach and good aftercare. And even then, I found out much more about the day-to-day living with the band here on LBT than from my surgeon.

I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support. I don't want anyone to think for one moment that what happened to my daughter is commonplace - I have learned that it is extremely unusual. In talking with the nursing staff at the hospital yesterday, they assured me my daughter was a very unique case. But, please let me say, if you are suffering from any unusual side effects, vomiting, retching, fever -anything other than weight loss - please contact your physician and do not allow them to give you a quick answer.

I am not in any way putting any blame on the doctor, hospital, staff or my daughter. It is just something that happened. Although, when she reported the vomiting, over all these months, she was told to return to liquids, which we now know was not the answer.

At 9AM yesterday (Wednesday) a CT Scan was performed. By noon she was in surgery. The surgery was performed arthoscopically and her band was removed. The band had slipped, or more correctly as you said, her stomach had slipped and when the stomach above the band became larger than the stomach below the band her stomach flipped upside down.

The band, which the doctor admitted was too small, was around the middle of her stomach and had obviously been there for some time. When it was removed, her stomach did not go back into shape, but remained as if the band was still there. So, quite possibly she will have the full effects of the band without having the band or having to deal with fills, etc.

They were able to return her stomach into the correct position. They also removed a lot of adhesions from the original surgery, drain some Fluid and infection from around her gall bladder and gastric area.

She was in a great deal of pain when I left her last night, but was on morphine. They were bringing ice chips for her, which would probably taste pretty good by now. Her husband stayed the night and she should be able to come home today.

Again, thank you for your prayers, we do appreciate them. Know that each of you are in my prayers and I am pleased and excited for your weight loss - you are doing great - keep up the good work.

Diane

Thank you for the update Diane. I'm so glad your daughter is doing well. I hope she will indeed be able to continue to have some of the positive effects of being banded, even without having one in place.

Thank you so much for letting us know how your daughter is doing.

I'm glad surgery went well. Sounds like it was very involved. I'm praying she heals very well and they got all of the infection. Let us know how she's doing. Take care!

Just wanted you to know that I had a similiar experience with the band. I have been banded since July 18, 2007 and have lost over 100 lbs. I feel so good. I have had bouts of coughing and throwing up every 5 - 10min all night long. It got to the point that I was dehydrated. I went to the doctor and got the fill taken out and was fine after that. Got x-ray to check if the band had slipped. Everything was fine. Got the fill put back and a few weeks later I had a bad cough and was throwing up a lot a mucus again. It was like bronchitis. It got to the point that I could not keep anything down and it felt like the food was in my throat and wouldn't go down. It would take about 4 hrs. Went to DR and they remove the Fluid again that they had put back in the time before. It's been about 4 days and can finally eat. In fact, as soon as the fuild was extracted I felt better. I will diffinitely be cautious about the fills that I get in the future. The PA said that my insides were irritated from coughing and may have caused the stomach to swell and make the band tight. I could not have lost the weight without the band. It is a wonderful invention (tool)!! You just have to listen to your body and have a doctor or PA to call on. It is a learning experience and everyones case is different.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
