I am starving, I need help......

Recommended Posts

I have to be on a 10 day liquid diet and I am only on day 2. I did really great yesterday but today my stomach is making all kinds of niose and I am starving. I am not sure that 8 more days is going to be doable. I am really tired and feel really run down and I have 8 more days of this to go. For those of you that had to fast or do strict liquids what did you do to make it through? ~Mandy

First of all, the gurgling tummy probably isn't hunger. The key to the liquids phase is to continually be drinking something. When you're finished with one, start another!! You will be extremely tired for the first week or two after surgery. I know that the first week I had to go to the store or to the mall for graduation gifts and I would come home and sleep for 3 hours afterwards! By two weeks out, I was almost normal as far as energy. Matter of fact, I was eager to get started on my walking, etc.

You can do this!! Just 8 more days. Remember, drink, drink, drink!!!

Good luck,

Tricia H

Hi Mandy,

I hear ya! My surgery is scheduled for July 26th and I am on day 1 of a 7 day liquid diet. I'm having some trouble with lightheadedness, but fortunately I haven't been too hungry. I made myself a bunch of sugar free Jello and that seems to fill me up. I don't enjoy it because I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners, but it's definitely helped to take the edge off today. What kind of Protein supplement are you using? I should have taken their advice and tried a few beforehand because I can hardly stomach the one I chose.

I keep telling myself this will all be a distant memory soon. Keep me updated and we can help each other through this!

I amdoing the Atkins shakes, I have used them in the past and they really aren't too bad. I am allowed sugar free popscicles, Jello and broth, 2 Protein Shakes and 3 servings of yogurt each day. And as many sugar free drinks as I would like. I found the atkins fruit punch to be really good as well as the propel. I am just starving, I made the joke that even the catfood looked good and they are on dry food only :rolleyes . I know I can do this, I am just not sure why I can't have chicken as it is low in carbs and has no sugar in it. I would love to have anything solid right now. I am going for sugar free popscicles tomorrow, they were out of them over the weekend but should have them again tomorrow. We are in Chicago and it has been really hot lately and the frozen section of the store was pretty much cleaned out. Well I am going to make some broth and then take a nice warm bath, maybe that will take my mind off of this. ~Mandy

Hi Mandy:

Yea the two week liquid diet really is tough! I found that if I made the sugar free Jello and drank it cool before it set it really helped with the hunger. The broth also helped after all day Protein drinks (Bleagh!) I found sugar free coffee syrups that helped with the taste of the Protein Drinks. Good Luck! It's only two weeks, it's only two weeks, it's only two weeks.................................

Try painting your house! I'm painting my daughter's room, and it kept me occupied all day! Now, I'm sore and my arm aches, but I didn't eat, just Protein Shakes and Water, and a nice little dinner (I'm allowed that in pre-op...don't know why there are so many different ones).

A little prayer never hurts, either.

Mandy -

I apologize. I didn't realize that you hadn't been banded yet. I thought you were talking about the gurgling you get for the first two weeks after surgery!!

I didn't have to do a liquid diet before surgery so I can't help you with the pre-op diet. Hopefully you'll get help from some of the others here. There's another thread that is similar to yours and DeLarla had some good advice to that person.

The thread is under Support and titled Banded one week ago and I'm starving! It was dated 7-06-05. DeLarla really knows how to help people and she's so supportive!!!

Thank you so much Jack for that saying at the bottom of your post.

"NOTHING tastes as good as being thin FEELS......"

I have to keep reminding myself of this - don't know why I should. I mean I felt desperate enough to have myself cut open and foreign objects stuck inside for this very reason and yet my brain has not quite been able to bend around it yet.:)

That is my new moto, Nothing taste as good as being thin feels, it is even on my personal e-mail signature. I am not allowed ensure, boost or any of those drinks. Only carb solutions or Atkins shakes. The problem is I don't tolerate sugar substitutes well, I would rather drink unsweetened drinks. I am getting there today is day 3 and I didn't wake up ravinous so that is a start I think. I am going to be out with my mom all day and I am packing a bag of stuff that I can have with an ice pack to keep it nice and cold. I think I might go for a swim this afternoon too, then get to bed early. I have several books that I picked out for after surgery but I may need to get more as I have been reading during meal time at my house, it keeps me away from the table. Thanks for the encouragement and kind words, you all are the best. ~Mandy

Ok Mandy..I have been on the Liquid Protein pre op diet for almost three weeks now. I have cheated and totally regretted it. My stomach would feel soo engourged and after being on the liquid diet for as long as I have been I feel that I ruined my previous work. I was 335 pounds three years ago when I was diagnosed with PCOS. I had gained 80 pounds in a year with no change in my diet. My hair was thinning and my skin was getting darker and my menses were totally out of control. I actually had a period that lasted for TEN (yes you read that right 10) weeks. Talk about feeling like crap during your one week periods try ten weeks straight. I was starting to think that I was going to menstrate myself to death. Then I got scared and started walking 30 min EVERY day!! I lost 35 pounds in 4 months and my stomach muscles started taking on a shape other than SAG. my periods have since been pretty much normal again. but now I need to get the rest of it off. I have been flip floping ack and forth from 310 to 300 since april. I started my liquid Protein diet july 5. I love my shakes they are sooo awesome. I use Pro Rated Alpine vanilla. I got it at costco for $20 for a 6 # tub. I mixed it with 2% milk at first and I loved it. then I thought to incorporate more protein in it (the powder had 22 grams per scoop) I started using 8th Contintnet Light Soy milkVanilla flavor..its adds 7 more grams of protien to my shakes. they taste like a treat. I have them for my three meals and drink drink drink drink all day long of my FLAVOR SPLASH AQUAFINA water..sooo freaking good tasting I had to call them to make sure there really was no cal no carb no sugar. They said no none. I also enjoy the crystal light Water pack on the go mixes. they taste good too. then I have sugar free fat free Jello. it satisfies my urge to chew. I live in northern nevada where we have had over a week straight of temps over 100 and there had been a run on the sugar free popcicles here too.

I know that there are more options out there that i am not aware of but, I love ones i have been told of and discovered. Keep your chin up and know that the more you lose before surgery the less you have to loose after. I think of it as a farewell to dieting forever..This sugery is teaching me to eat right for the rest of my life and there will be nore more diets.

I found a quote that inspires me and i will share it with you..

"It's never too late to be what you might have been."

I have small quotes like that all over my house to help me keep my chin up. I put my fat picture on my freezer door as to see it everytime i open the doors to my fridge.

I dont like the person i see in it and think everytime i choose not to open that door and binge of how much sooner i will be saying good riddance to the old unhealthy me and hello to the new me.

Well I am off to my pre op appt for blood work etc. talk to you soon and i hope that something i shared with you will help. if notheing more than to diatract you from your humger, Best of luck to you

The fasting part before surgery is the scariest part for me. I dont know if I can do 10 days of liquids. I am going to ask for appetite suppresents.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
