Best Advice for preventing excess skin

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to loose weight at a good rate. I want to do my best to prevent the excess skin after weight loss. Is there any lotions that will help or any other ideas.

Yesterday I did buy bio-oil to help with the scars and I was thinking it also could help with the skin, however, its expensive and I don't want to waist it.

Using lots of lotion will help elasticity somewhat (just staying hydrated in general will help.) Also, building muscle will help as well. I am also worried about the excess skin, but I am noticing that around my arms and my thighs it's actually tightening up. I can only attribute that to muscle development through exercise. I have some fatty loose skin right near my arm pits and upper, upper thighs but it's not as bad as I expected at all. Not even noticeable... and my thighs are definitely shrinking...

Amazingly, my stomach, while still humongous is shrinking and not "floppy" either... so miracles do happen!

say a prayer, hope you have good genes, and exercise. :D there are no guarantees on the loose skin & how it will look after weight loss - even w/the best prevention.

you'll know half way in whether you'll need attention to certain areas in the form of plastic surgery - but i wouldn't worry about any of that while you concentrate on losing as much as possible.

I did the lotion, exercise, etc. And as I lost weight, I was thanking GOD for the lack of excess skin. Even DH was impressed. I attributed it to my youth. :D Then, one day I woke up, and it was there. Tummy skin, and batwing arms! Oh, the horror! I am just kidding, about 'the horror.' When you lose a lot of weight, you'll have to expect some excess skin... My tummy, it is all UNDER the bikini line where my underwear is, so even though it is not the prettiest without underwear, it is not HORRIBLE. And the arms, I just practice the wave of the queen. It hasn't kept me from wearing sleeveless items. A little excess skin is nothing compared to that 75 pounds I was lugging around before, so I am very thankful. And someday, when I plateau, and when finances permit, I'll try to get the tummy and arms taken care of. Till then, I'll enjoy my skinny body!

How much skin you end up with depends on a lot of variables. Your genes and type of skin, how much exercise you get and the type (weight lifting being good), hydration, skin care, how much you actually lose, AGE and skin damage due to sun exposure. It's different for everyone, but most people do have some issue with it in varying degrees. I didn't notice mine until just recently.

My excess skin is hideable too for the most part, there's nothing on earth will help my disgusting saggy bum, but on the front, i can wear a brief bikini and it doesnt show.

My excess skin ALL appeared in the last 10kg of weight loss. You get to a certain level of skinny and it starts to show. I'd rather be thin with a bit of wrinkle than stay fatter to hide it, but its personal choice. Although I have to get my boobs done, they're awful. I'm just grateful its not visible, like batwings or a pannus and my thighs are OK.

Dont waste your bio oil on it, there's nothing you can apply that will prevent it. Just being physically in the best shape you can be is the key and after that, surgery.

Amen to that! I got crows feet! I was happy to see them...

I was a very slow loser, but a big exerciser, so I am going to partially attribute that to the skin going back. I was obese for about 10 years. Not my whole life. So I think that may make a difference also. Everything went back for me, even the stomach. My biggest issue is my chest. They look like cylinders when I bend over. Icky. I would love to have them done but I'm a big chicken. Good bras work wonders! I think the skin thing might just have so many factors that there isn't one thing that can be done to prevent it. I think sometimes the things we notice on ourselves others don't. Good Luck!

I want to update this, lol. My boobs have shrunk even more (lost a kilo or two) and when I put my bikini on the other day - there was no wrinkly overhang visible. They're now probably a C cup and small enough to be entirely contained.

So that's how to save 10 grand on boob surgery. Just diet till you dont have any :-(

I wasn't having boobage issues until 10 pounds ago... and then woke up and they were... GONE! I lost 10 pounds in my boobs! I had thought of having a reduction, but now... I kind of miss them... :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
