Acid Reflux and Unfill

Recommended Posts

I was banded Oct 3 and had no problems at all..now I have (always had it but not this badly) major acid reflux that is causing nausea 24/7. I've started taking two nexium daily and will be able to see my doctor tomorrow afternoon. I know he will want to do an unfill but then I will have no restriction at all since my band is brand new. Can someone explain how this works...how long will he unfill for, is the reflux going to get better and go away or will it always come back if I try to get a fill? I've done great so far, losing 43 lbs in 5 weeks and I hate to go back to being able to eat anything I want.

It really depends on you... Your doc will probably do an upper GI to make sure all is well with the band. He/She might do a slight unfill and keep you on Nexium to see if that helps. Some bandsters have reflux issues post-band... My doc tried Prilosec with me, which did not help, but Zantac has been a lifesaver. You'll probably just have to experiment a bit. Each doctor's protocol is different. Hang in there, and wait to see what he says. And make sure you let us know what happens! Hope you feel better soon!

It is different for everyone.

I found I had to have a lower fill level . . . and then it is gone completely.

Either I am never hungry but cough throughout the night with reflux (I have even spit up on my pillow a couple of times which is rather unpleasant) . . . or I deal with a little hunger and having to be more careful with my diet but can sleep like a baby. I never had reflux in my life prior to banding.

i had horrible reflux before surgery and was taking acephex for at least 1 year. Since the surgery a miracle has happened and I have taken one acephex. My surgery was on Aug.5,2008/ Today I got my 2nd fill and I am delighted to say that I am down 53 lbs.

Good luck

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
