How long do the gas pains last?

Recommended Posts

It's been a long eight months since I started this journey but I finally had my surgery two days ago. The gas pains didn't really start until yesterday, probably because of the pain killers, but thay are here now. How long has it taken for these to end? Any input would be appreciated.

I didn't get gas until day 5. None of the pain or gas medicines helped. The only thing that helped was walking. Any time the pain hit, I would get up and start walking. It helped so much. So get up and walk, walk, walk. Sounds trite, but it's true. I hope you feel better soon.

Mine lasted about a week, heating pad and walking are the best things. It does get better with time, but sure hurts like crazy till it does.

I agree. Walking and the heating pad was my only way to get any relief. Just hang in there because it does get better. I'm 6 days postop and hardly have anymore gas pains.

I was banded on 10-22, i have to agree that heating pad, walking and gas x strips are a life saver.

For me it was almost a week!!!!! Just hang in there because all of a sudden they will be gone. I agree with the others heating pad and walking. Good luck.

I was banded 6 days ago (Monday Oct 20), and I still have pain in my left shoulder. I tried walking, heating pad, the heavy-duty pain killers, and nothing really helped. So I called my doctor, and he said the heavy-duty pain killers might also be causing more gas! Go figure! So I stopped taking those and the pain is now manageable. I was in tears before, it was so bad. I did take some Tylenol before going to bed and was able to sleep the night through, which I haven't been able to do before; so it's either because it's day 6, or because I stopped taking the Vicodin (since the gas is the only thing that has ever hurt), but I feel almost human again. I'm even going to go do some laundry!

Symethacone Gas x extra strength and a heating pad. I thought I was going to blow up it should go away within 24 hrs. I hope this works for you.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
