It's an acronym for "Productive Burp" which is what many call it when, once you have restriction, you take a bite of food that is too large or not well chewed or for whatever reason will not go through a lap band stoma and on into the stomach below. Not strictly traditional "vomiting" (because there is no stomach acid etc) the term was coined to describe that specific type situation. It is usually accompanied by excessive mucous production which is referred to as "slime". You can "slime" without "PB'ing", because sometimes the food goes on through. It is not comfortable and is a good motivator to chew chew chew and take small bites. A few people will PB anyway but usually it is because of the reasons I've listed, or because the band is filled too tightly.

for me when i hear the words "productive burp".... burping is not what happens for me even though i know i'm PB'ing.

i can feel the food lodged right under the breast bone. it's a lump that won't go away... and it hurts.

i stand and lean from the waist over the toilet, cough twice and the piece of stuck food comes right out.

usually if i'm burping that tells me the food is going down okay.

Same most of the time I will have the slimy burps or just a reguritate slightly as the stomach is trying to move the lodged food. If after about 30 minutes of this excruciating sensation it wont move I then generally will throw it up (only what was stuck in the stoma). However my doctor said that projectile vomitting is very bad and can cause band slippage so I generally try very hard to avoid the throwing up.

I am four weeks out from surgery and go for my first fill on Friday (2 days). There are times I can eat a "normal" size meal - so I don't think I'm too tight and probably need a fill. Other times, I take one or two bites and PB/vomit cups of slime. Doesn't seem to matter what I'm eating - once something hits all that mucus - up it comes.

Have lost 25# including during the pre-op diet but no weight loss in two weeks. Sound normal/ok??

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
