I am a night eater--help!!!

Recommended Posts

I sleep off and on all night long. During the periods I am up, I usually eat something. I know there are physiological reasons why I am compelled to eat during the night, but I am hoping my 1st fill on Wednesday will stop me from being hungry during the night and STOP this terrible habit. It's 2:48 AM and I just had 2 pieces of wheat toast with fake butter on it. I know I must stop eating carbs but I just can't stop. Anyone else an insomniac with similar problems regarding eating during the night?

The only reason why (I think) I am not GAINING weight in a serious way is because I do exercise consistently. I NEED that 1st fill!!!!!

Hey all,

I work nights too, and for me I have just made healthier choices. I will eat some yogurt and maybe an apple and Peanut Butter. But then I just have to watch myself and try to push through. I agree with smsmithart distraction is the best thing. Boredom for me would lead to eating. So now I find other things to fill the bit of downtime I have on nights. Find other things to keep your hands and mouth busy, chew some gum, read, surf the net...just dont go into the kitchen. And like I said if it comes down to it, make healthier choices. The cravings for cabs will subside the longer you cut them out.. Good luck!

Its 3:44 a.m. and Iv been up at least an hour. If you are waking up during the night and craving, that is often a sign of high sugar, which will eventually go away as you control it with high Protein choices. I drink some milk or something, but Im eating or drinking something too.

Maybe you dont have high sugar, but its often a sign of being pre diabetic that you wake up during the night craving carbs. another word for it is insulin resistant. another way to tell, one of the biggest signs is you carry your weight in your stomach.

the best thing you can do is just stick with this and try and not eating sugary or carbs during the day and get it under control. Last time I went thru this I did a low gi, but it still took 2 or 3 months for my blood sugar to quit spiking, then I was one of the bigger losers on the site. Once that blood sugar quits spiking at night you will be fine. It will happen eventually with a better diet.

I got the lap band because I didnt want to go thru this again and knew the signs when I started waking up again during the night and couldnt sleep until I had something to eat or drink.

Its true it might just be habit, but it could also be a sign of insulin spiking. Just hang in there and it will get better. Im a insomniac to start with. That doesnt help does it?

My doc said to cut out bread, sugar and carbs, like you said. I am going to renue myself this very second to do that. I don't have sugar at all, and I can stop the carbs. THEN, I have to work on the bread. I know I can do it. I have lost 20lbs pre and post surgery, and I will take this initial fill on Wednesday as an opportunity to start more weight loss.

My wife and I are going out with old friends this afternoon for dinner and everyone will be watching. I am also going to the grocery store in a little while and will look for healthy choices if I "cave in" during the night. I really secretly hope the fill will curtail my cravings at night as well.

Thanks all for writing.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
