Abnormal EKG and surgery scheduled for 9/23

Recommended Posts

I was called Friday morning by my surgeons office and told that my preop testing showed an abnormal EKG. It showed mild QT-T wave prolongation with minimal nonspecific ST- T Wave abnormality. Whatever that is, I have to be seen by a cardiologist on Monday and be cleared before I can have surgery on Tuesday. Has anyone else had this issue or know what the EKG meant?

Went to cardiologist today and he okayed me for surgery tomorrow 9-23. Yeah. Just received a call from surgeons office and I have to be at hospital at 6 am. It is finally happening! Getting banded tomorrow.

Sorry I can't help you with the interpretation but it may be nothing. My sis had an ekg prior to having her gall bladder removed and it showed she had a weak heart. ends up they just didn't have the electrodes in the right spot or something odd like that. So don't borrow trouble, as the saying goes...it's probably something minor that the anesthetist will just have to adjust for. Good luck!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. It is just so nerve racking to have come this far and be so close and possibly have a wrench thrown in things. Plus, my doctors fit me in for the surgery to be done before October 1 since I have Tricare and have met my castastrophic cap for the year and will not have to pay anything if it is done by October 1. My husband is out of work. If it is done after October 1, I can't afford it at this time.

Believe it or not I understand your dilemma. We are tricare also. I'm in nursing school. And let me tell you, you don't just take a few days off of nursing school! there are portions that, if i miss, regardless of my reason, state law requires that they fail me! Egad!

So I had surgery 8/11 and the doc couldn't place the band (my liver was still too fatty) back on the liver shrink diet and he banded me 8/29. I missed 4 hours of a "mandatory" class but that's under the wire. Now I'm playing catch up, but it's worth it. I didn't want to wait until christmas and pay out another huge amount to have it done again!

Yes you do understand having glitches thrown into things. I hope you do not miss any others classes which will make you go over the wire and not pass that portion. I am glad that things worked out for you. I work for the state and am the Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent and Chief of Security at a Juvenile Correctional Facility. I worked all kinds of extra hours (which I didn't log) so I could leave out and leave the office in a good a shape as possible. I know I will come back to a mess and didn't want twice the mess by leaving things undone when I left. The guys were already stressing as to what they were going to do without me there. I think it will be a good reality check for them. haha

No kidding! I'm glad I'm not in an office any more. I was a bookkeeper for 20+ years and if I didn't do my job it didn't get done. It was pretty stressful at times!

Anyway not to rattle on and on about me. Good luck to you! Please post how you are, ok? I'll think of you tomorrow and cross my fingers that it is either something weird about HOW the test was administered, or some minor thing that the anesthetist can easily correct for. Good luck, ok? :girl_hug:

RestlessMonkey...Can I ask a question about what you said...

So I had surgery 8/11 and the doc couldn't place the band (my liver was still too fatty) back on the liver shrink diet and he banded me 8/29.

Did you do everything right before pre-op and have this happen? Your advice is wonderful. I read what you wrote about why it is so important to NOT eat mushies right after your operation..and, stay on the liquids. Invaluable! Thank you!

I am having surgey Oct 20. Trying to get all my ducks in a row.

Ruby124...no, I didn't follow the preop diet perfectly the first time. In my defense, I didn't realize I had a fatty liver and needed to shrink it by following a VERY specific diet. Since I am a diet QUEEN (I could probably teach many diets LOL) I did mostlly what my doc said, but also my own thing. I lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks and he was pleased! (me too) but my liver was still too thick. (see I'm not kidding when I say I believe in "question authority"...LOL ) Once I realized precisely WHY he wanted me to do HIS diet, I cried in recovery for about 1 minute then got determined. From the day after my 1st surgery I did exactly what he said and 2 1/2 weeks later and ANOTHER 17 pounds down I was successfully "banded". LOL So Like a good friend of mine says, if i can't be a good example let me be a horrible warning LOL

i'm not a cardiologist or anything but im pretty sure its nothing to be too worried about.. your surgeon just wants to make sure everything is ok before he decideds to cut into you... Its good that he is taking all the precautions.. They will probably just need to make some modifications during surgery to fit your needs...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
