Can you exercise too hard??

I just got banded 5 days ago and so far its been hell BUUUT I know that there should be light at the end of this tunnel end of week 2 I'm hoping :redface: For the future, I was wondering if we are at all limited in exercising? Once I get my energy level up and some weight off I play pretty hard (so to speak)... with tennis, volleyball, dancing, etc and was wondering if I needed to be careful about moving my body a certain way. It's probably silly but it's been weighing on my mind :frown: Thanks

I remember feeling port pain and having stitches and wondering if I'd ever be back to normal.

Jachut is right . . . once you get the all-clear, you can do anything.

Thanks alot :biggrin: that;'s good to know. Right now im having alot of back pain and spasms from overcompensating in guarding my stomach and being really careful. I can't wait to be able to feel better and exercise and get this weightloss and helathier lifestyle going!! :D

I would start out doing long cardio sessions at a less intense pace. I was about 3 to 4 weeks out before I got the green flag from my doctor. I started on long walks and just getting my body use to everything and also rebuilding the muscle that I lost. Last year I tore my ACL and literally watch my huge thigh muscle dwindle away after about 2 weeks of inactivity. If you are bored and tired of waiting then start laying the ground work now. Do you have a club membership? Have you reviewed your daily schedule and determined times that would work for a workout session? Your not going to wear your old lawn mowing shoes to work out are you? Have you found a Protein powder that you like?

I was a firm believer in getting all things right in my life during this transformation. I joined an active church and started doing things with them once my energy came back. I scheduled a vacation with the family to Disney World on the day I thought I would hit goal. I made sure that my family knew that it was all about me this year and that part of the reason that my weight got out of hand was that I put myself last.

Mornin' Ladies!

I am just getting back into a regular weight training habit - used to work out quite a bit (at least 4 days / week) and I love feeling strong. I let a heart-related ailment scare me out of the gym a while ago - I literally passed out on the treadmill because of cardiac fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and had to have a cardioversion (shock) back to regular rhythm. I laid off exercise for quite a while - just plain scared.:)

After I started work with my current employer a little over a year ago, I figured out quickly that I needed to WALK - I'm at a university, the campus is kinda spread out, and many, many people walk here. That said, I do about a mile every morning with the dog - he needs his exercise - and between 1.25 - 1.5 miles at lunchtime (weather permitting). :sad:

I know the walking will be good for me to continue after surgery, but for those of you who lift - how much time did you take off from the gym? Since I'm doing this pre-surgery, I'm hoping to cut my recovery time down from what it would have been for the non-exercising me...

Thoughts, anyone? Should I post this in a different topic? :cool2:

Cardio 4 days after surgery. Weights less than 20 pounds 4 days after surgery. Weights greater than 20 pounds 1 month after surgery. Did Cardio (elliptical) and weights for a few months, then got into running, biking, and swimming. The #1 rule is don't "crush it" every workout. Leave some in the tank, and never progress more than 5% per week. It will build. I went from nothing last year (I'm about two weeks from my band anniversary) to biking 200+ miles, running 50+, swimming 8000 meters+ every month. Everything in moderation. The gains will come through consistent effort.

Thanks for the info - I plan to follow doc's orders, but I'm going to ask how much I can push it, based on how I feel. I love to walk, so it sounds like that's going to work in my favor. :cursing:

You started back on weights 4 DAYS after surgery? You go, Iron Warrior! I hope I'm feeling as strong...I don't want to lose the progress I've made so far. I will also follow your advice to 'leave some in the tank' and work back up to pre-surgery levels.

Noticed by the caption on your response that you're a Unitarian - well, hello sister! I'm a Unitarian-Universalist myself...nice to see another one of "us" on the boards! :lol:

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
