What is the pre surgery diet?

Recommended Posts

I am new to the discussion and do not have my surgery approved by my insurance yet, but I am wondering what is the pre surgery diet?

That depends on your doctor, there is no standard diet. It can last anywhere from one day to two weeks prior to surgery and can consist of all liquid or part liquid/part solid to all solid.

I was on two weeks liquid Protein (Protein shakes, broth, SF Jello etc.)

My Dr claims the plan on preop is to stay about 1000 calories, but I don't see how I can do that on what he wants me to eat during that time. Essentially - 1 cup of veggies, 6 oz of meat, 8 oz skim milk, 3/4 of a piece of fruit (how odd!) and up to three slices of bread. I plan on deviating a bit because I don't need the bread, but some oatmeal for Breakfast would be lovely. It does vary greatly by doctor, but a good percentage of them will require you to do some amount of liquid/protein shake.< /p>

Mine consisted of 5-6 pkgs. of a Medifast meal per day and unlimited amounts of broth, sf Jello and pocsicles. I must say by the middle of week 2 I needed some meat and vegetables and ate skinless bonless chicken and bussel sprouts and my surgery only took 15 mins because my liver wasn't fat. Every Dr. however is different.

What Jodi says...although mine lasted 3 weeks and I didn't do what my surgeon said exactly (tho I did lose 15 pounds) so I had to do it ANOTHER 18 days. So All told my preop diet was 5 1/2 weeks. Moral? Do exactly whatever your surgeon tells you to do!

(and not everyone has one!

My pre-op diet:

Protein drink/shake for breakfast

Cup of Low sugar/No sugar added juice for morning snack

Protein drink/shake for lunch

Smart One/Healthy Choice/Etc meal for supper (I choose low carb meals to keep the carbs down)

Protein shake or Low Fat Yogurt for evening snack.

They said I can taylor this to my tastes as long as I stay within the following:

800-1000 calories per day

50-80 carbs

60+ grams of protein

Mine is technically to be for 2 weeks pre-op but since we still have not set an exact date they have already let me start my diet.

I have lost 7.5 lbs in 5 days.

I agree with everyone else. I guess it is up to your doctor. My MD wants me on Clear liquids X 2 days, the day before, I have to take antibotics and MOM. That is it!

My weight loss center has a standard 2 week plan of 3 shakes a day, plus any 'free' vegetables that I can eat - like salads and such. However, I asked the dietitian if I could skip this pre-op diet since I've lost 37 pounds with regular diet and exercise since starting this journey in May. The dietitian agrees, but it will be up to the surgeon, and I'm still waiting for an insurance approval.

Jodi said it correctly . . . every doctor is different in what they expect from their patients pre-surgery. Most want you to lose some weight in order for the liver to shrink, and to get you accustomed to being on a liquid diet for the post surgery stage. I found the first 2-3 days the hardest . . . after that it was a cake walk. I read alot with big tall glass of liquid at my side. I also slept alot the first couple of days when your body is purging all the sugar and toxins from your system. By the third day I felt wonderful. Consult your physician and see what he or she recommends. You can do it. Just keep your surgery date in your mind as your goal. I wouldn't let anything stop me from having my lap band . . . I waited close to a year and half for it . . . I was PUMPED up and ready!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
