I am doubting that my insurance will pay for the lap band, I am being a little negative but I know how they fight paying for anything,

Who has self paid here in MIchiang and which Dr.'s were good to work with. I live in Clarklake close to Lansing or Ann Arbor. Thank you!

Hi everyone!

Hi there. I did not bother with my insurance either. I went to great lakes weight loss on the internet and found a self pay method for 10,700. THis is in Detroit with a well known physician, Dr. Laker. You can find other ppl on this forum that also had him. I was banded on aug 26th, two weeks ago. I figured my insurance would not pay because my bmi wasnt high enough and I didnt have any other medical problems except some depression.

Heres the thing, As Americans we spen 5o thousand dollars on an automobile, what is 11 thousand on ourselves in comparison? Plus, if you are self pay you will get a surgery date in less than two weeks from the day you call and request to talk to a surgeon about the surgery. I am very happy that I went through with this.

I hate it when I read how many ppl have been waiting on their insurance companies to come thru for them so that they can begin their journey. By all means, if you have insurance and dont mind the wait, Go for it! I mean, that is what we have insurance for!! However, if your situation does not allow that or you are impatient like me then the self pay option is great. Try this site..::..Great Lakes Weight Loss Surgery - Expert Lap Band and Gastric Bypass Surgeons..::. You will be pleased at all the information.

I also went through GLWL. The the doctors are Webber, Laker and Weiner all at Harper Hospital. I had my surgery with Webber on 9/12. I would say I am mostly happy with my experience. My only issues: I was not impressed with the Nursing staff at Harper after surgery. Very slow!!!! An orderly took me to a room from recovery, the nurse showed up 2 hours later and said she didn't know I was there! Then called for pain meds at 4pm, a new nurse comes in at 6 and said she didn't get the message. I also hated the little speaker things on the beds that interrupt your rest every time the nurses call to eachother. Also, Dr Webber never showed up Saturday morning to discharge me. It was a resident, whom gave me no presciptions to take home and no paperwork. Said you're all set....So, just don't schedule on a Friday.... Other than that, The price is right for self pay in Michigan 10,700. I am up and doing great one week out. I've lost 13 pounds since the day before my surgery. Good luck with your research.

I am planning to use Dr. Nunn at Forrest Hills (Barix Clinic) in Ypsilanti. I am not sure what the self pay is there but they have been very helpful.

I am going through insurance so I am still waiting on a date.

Hi everyone,

I live in southeast MI and trying to do as much research about this procedure as possible. When I first heard about it, I thought the band would be temporary - lose the weight then the band is removed. So I was shocked to learn that it is meant to be permanent. Really worried about slippage, the band puncturing the stomach, what happens when I want to have kids, what if I decide to have it removed just because I want to - does ins cover cost of removing it. Also concerned that this procedure hasn't been around long - only a couple of years so what if I decide to have the band removed after 10 years..what condition will my stomach be in? any permanent damage??? Lots of hesitation.

Also concerned about finding the right surgeon. I am attending an informational session by Dr. Weiner at Harper Hospital. Not familiar with the hospital at all and don't know anyone who has stayed there. Did a bit of research on the 3 drs at GLWL..leaning more towards dr. Webber but more research is needed of course.

Would really like to hear from you guys regarding your experience, doctor of choice, why did you choose him and how have things turned out after the surgery? How is the support staff at GLWL..do they even have one?

Any information you guys can give me is greatly appreciated and I hope everything has turned out well for all of you!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
